Tree Selection ....HELP!!!

Hi,

I would like to plant trees along our fenceline as a screen and wind protection. The area is about 40meters and I'd like them to be no more than 8-10meters tall, evergreen, hardy, full sun, suitable for South Gippsland Victoria (plenty of rainfall, wind tolerant, cold in winter and sometimes really hot in summer) and be a neat shape with leaves not going all the way to the ground. Can anyone please help me with some suggestions. Thanks for your help!

Dwarf flowering gums can be beautiful growing to 6ms. All the beauty of the gum without the height and limb dropping.

LIkewise there are enough varieties of wattle to suit every climate. They are so good as windbreaks that they are planted enmasse along highways. I personally love the silver leaved varieties but there are some fern leaved ones that are stunning also.

Hi sunnyshama25. I recommend dark walls (matte finish) for your dedicated theatre room. The reason is so light doesn't bounce around the walls; you will enjoy a better theatre experience. My family's previous home's theatre room had three white walls and only one dark wall. We regretted not painting all walls dark. We did have heavy drapes and pelmets for the large windows in the room to reduce light as much as possible. The floor was thickly carpeted in a dark colour (for acoustics and to reduce light reflection). In designing our current home's theatre room, we applied our experience and painted all walls Resene dark plum, matte finish. The heavy dark drapes are the exact colour as the walls (dark plum). Again, thick carpet - in charcoal colour this time. I hope this helps address your questions about your new theatre room. Best wishes!

A house in our street is very similar to this, the owners have done a fabulous job celebrating the style of the house, the roof line and bessa blocks have been made a feature, they have decked the front and landscaped the gardens, it is dressed beautifully with 59/60s style pots lowish profile with three legs accopulco chairs out on the deck. I wish I could take a photo (but a bit creepy - going up and taking photos of some one else's front). They have put in new windows and doors. Thank you so much JE and Julie! The existing street front hedge is Murraya but is twiggy where we need it most - could be age, except that where it faces north it’s thick, so I’m guessing sun exposure is an issue. Hopefully the viburnum will be better!!!

I don't like drab except as a way of filling in the gaps . Oops , bloody autocorrect , I meant dune . And anything grey . I'd actually go Eucalypt on the walls and roof , 'natural' wood but with a charcoal or green tinge , and Forest Green for the gutters and barge boards around the roof , the windows and also that front veranda roof , just as a bit of contrast . Yes , I know , it will get a bit warmer , but it's 1/20th of the cladding , on 25% of the year , so live with it ! And of course , the nicest bright dark green shade you can get for the front door . Don't want greens ? Go with surfmist as the main , roof and walls , Deep Ocean everywhere I suggested Forest Green , and an almost glowing Royal Blue front door .

Thanks Austere for all your advice, your selections are all beautiful and I really love the flowering gums but am a little worried that a row of them will invite 500 parrots, I love birds but too many could be a problem??

TBH I live in a rainbow parrot colony. There are literally thousands of them in my neighbourhood. They favour the norfolk pines. The flowering gum is more likely to attrract the rainbow bee eater. Parrots eat nuts not nectar.

Our Coles car park is lined with lemon myrtles they never have birds in them. But they are a very attractive tree.
