floorboards vs tiles in living and kitchen

Hi I am planning to have floorboards in all areas and was wondering if it is better to have tiles in the kitchen and living areas and floorboards on stairs and upstairs. Can anyone advise me what would be the best option

There is no right or wrong answer.
It comes down to the overall look, that you are after, and your budget.
You could have feature tiles in the kitchen, and the rest floorboards.

Wow love the inlaid feature tiles. A great way to add some pattern. Normally a full tiled floor looks cold and drab. Floorboards warm up the look. But they require more maintenance and care. Tiles are cold in bedrooms, but that’s a good thing in hot areas.

Thanks for the feedback all... Here are some samples and it just shows how important to see them in the actual environment. Looks a little too dark even with a lot of light the longer plank is embelton brand and the other two are colonial quickstep. The two darker boards are already showing the hand prints. The embelton board (Belmont dark) was slightly cheaper albeit they had a special on that coloured board, so it should come in around $32 Sqm for the different colours. I'm almost sold on embelton as the look and feel is more advanced to the colonial. I'd love to go with real timber but this isn't my dream house, plus I have concerns that it would be truly appreciated based on the area I live. I'm aiming for a hybrid coastal look and just finished the walls in antique hamptons, so re painting in the short term isn't desired. In the pics the Belfort dark looks fantastic c but maybe I aim for La Mancha or maple in the embelton range

I'm personally a big fan of wood floors - our last house had wood floors everywhere except the bathrooms; our current house has wood floors in the hallways and living/dining areas, carpets in the bedrooms, and tile in the wet areas. We had and have area rugs everywhere (including on the carpet). And personally, I preferred the flooring in our previous house with wood just about everywhere. But that's me, not you. Unless you're planning to flip your house, you should choose the flooring you want, not what the glossy mags say you should have. (That said, you can always put underlay under a big rug on a wood floor - sheer heaven underfoot!)

Hi Fivedock If you're using a tile that looks like timber I think you would be best using the same tile from the front entry throughout. However if you used a tile that looked like stone or concrete in the kitchen/ back area for example, you could possibly use another that looked like timber in the front entry/ living room with fireplace. Or vice versa. This only works because you have a contrast between stone and timber and there's a reasonable demarcation between the living room with the fireplace and the back area. It looks terrible if you have two different timber tiles or two different stone tiles.

Hi I live in an apartment. I currently have carpet and would like to replace with floorboards. I've been told I can't put the wooden floors near one door so would need to be tile Otherwise the vinyl look wooden floorboards will fit. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do with my dilemma. The floorboards would also be installed in kitchen.

I've lived in many homes that were floorboards throughout including the kitchen. There really isn't any downside to it as long as you're not in the habit of dropping cast iron pans on the floor. I've always hated tiles in the kitchen as food finds it way onto the floor and stains the grout.

My pick would be timber or lino in the kitchen. Never understood the fascination for tiles on kitchen floors. The junction between that surface and timber is typically ugly.
