Spiral staircase for basement level
Hi all, we are considering opening up a space in our living room to make way for stairs to a converted lounge room underneath that's currently only accessible externally.
The basement ceiling height is approx 2.2m and we wanted to sacrifice around 1.5-1.8m of space.
In the beginning of our research we were looking at straight or U shaped stair cases but realised it would eat into a lot of our basement space below. so we are now considering a spiral one but am aware of the stigma of spiral staircases( narrow, unsafe). which is why I'm hoping my measurements will allow for a more comfortable descent.
What are your thoughts on spiral staircases? I had these ones in mind.
Attached also is the highlighted area where we are considering putting the stairs.
The floorplan is not up to date as we have since replaced the living room French doors to windows and have enclosed the window in the basement. this hopefully will hp ventilate and brighten the basement area below.
Your advice is much appreciated.

Comments (6)Base on your requirements, this plan would work and requires the least amount of structural alteration. It actually gives you a decent size kitchen. I have to say that oklouiese's plan is more common in new houses and is preferred by a lot of people. That said, new builds usually have a second lounge upstairs. If your measurements are correct, the kitchen against the back wall where the cooktop and fridge is going to be is 4079mm. Assuming you'll have a double door fridge, and a 600mm wide pantry. you still have decent bench space on each side of the cooktop. Assuming you need 1m walk way between each bench. Your island will be 2480mm x 1200mm which is PLENTY. (1.2m walk way is recommended but it comes down to personal preference and what is the most important to you.) Since the family room is not huge. Comments (17)my very basic suggestions include losing the external front steps and have a front porch with front door and entry foyer downstairs and access to under the house from the garage and have a simpler staircase (NB there's a lot of furniture and groceries and rubbish that have to go up and down stairs so all the stairs should be more comfortable and direct) with square landings and no angled steps original upstairs entry area could now be used as an office but you need to add furniture to the family dining area and alfresco to find the best use of floor space and doors, the powder room needs to be more private so i would lose the extra ensuite upstairs and make the rumpus room into a multi purpose space with sliding doors and ens upstairs has more than enough space for generous hallways, bigger bedrooms, more storage, a shared family bathroom, a living area and/or office and grouping the ens and wiw (with twice as much storage and dressing area) on the south west allows better access to the views from the toilet shower and master bedroom...See More
