50s To Now - Home Transformation

In 2019 we transformed a brick 1950’s house into an extremely functional family home. The house was probably updated along the way but was outdated, small and the garden was underutilised.

The location had it all so close to the beach, shops, golf and transport. The land size was typical of the time and now a rare thing.

Our brief was to bring this dated family home into the 20th century, and offer light &
functionality for a home on a large block. It had been a one family home since it was built and needed again to share the love of another family.

The existing home was very typical of the era, wood trims, ornate ceiling roses, breeze block fence, a central kitchen, toilet through the laundry in lean-to, closed in shower recess.

The process to achieve this brief was to remove three walls, relocate two doorways , block in the existing formal dining room and extend the home to provide large open spaces. The front living space remained as a formal living, the formal dining becoming a functional fourth bedroom. The closed in hall was opened and the kitchen added to the extension. A butlers kitchen was added and the laundry now became a separate space with external access.

The house design was to provide maximum cupboards/storage, to cater for a large family. Two texture cabinets were chosen in the kitchen to break the space, and add warmth and a modern feel, with shaker style cabinets using white and blue vinyl wrap created a classic Hampton look. We also added a black mirror splashback to throw light back into the room along with the image of the external gardens. Adding a fully function butlers pantry provided a space for washing dishes and food prep out of sight.

We kept some original features of the home by retaining the old etched bifold between the dining and lounge and reusing them in the laundry. We retained the ceiling rose in the formal lounge, however, all other original ceilings were removed and replaced. We reused the front fence breeze blocks and used them as a screen for the garden shed. The large ceiling in the family area was raised in the centre to break the large ceiling up and give form and texture. The vast alfresco area provided a large external entertainment area looking into the lush lawns and landscape. The old garage provided room for the scope to be an outdoor play area or house a large shed at a later stage.

We were thrilled with the final product and so excited about the interest received by the sales campaign. The house did sell with a record sale price achieved.
