Do you like white kitchen cabinets? (Personally I don't mind the look but think it probably needs more cleaning then most). Anyway, black and white is a classic combination and doesn't really become outdated. Even if you don't do the bench top yet or choose a different colour bench top later, everything goes with white.

Hi Magic M new kitchens have more drawers than doors. They also have soft closers on doors and drawers, as well as full extension runners on the drawers. Your kitchen is therefore immediately showing its age because it clearly has more doors and is probably missing the other elements I mentioned that are considered standard in today's functional kitchen. So it really comes down to your budget. If you have the budget I would replace the whole kitchen with cabinets (more drawers than doors) with a shaker style profile. Custom cabinets to the ceiling. Manmade stone such as Caesarstone benchtops. You could think about the same stone on the splashback as subway tiles are on their way out. If your budget doesn't run to a new kitchen then the Annie Sloan chalk paint as suggested is a good option on both the existing cabinets and the new add on ones. Any of your suggested colours in muted tones would work.

Thanks everyone so far. Only hesitation with glass (or a white-grey tinted glass) is that it might be a bit glarey with the spotlights above, but will definitely consider it! Cheers Annb, my father built the whole room including the cabinet :). The cd shelves are from IKEA. The metal strips you see are just over-door clothes hooks you can pick up for around $10ea. They just slide on top of any old door and are not bolted on in any way. We are going to install a rail inside to convert this to more of a wardrobe. The room dimensions are actually 3.8 x 3.7, but the width of the wall pictured is more around 2.7 because of the cabinet & bricks. Behind the curtain is a double sliding door with windows and optional external access. Same on opposite wall (which is more important to access.. and has nice views, hence the current, slightly awkward bed placement..) The pocket door is to what will be an ensuite. Main internal access is opposite, or external through the sliding door (marked with arrows in the second pic). The mezzanine is 1.4 wide, with sloping ceiling overhead. Could technically fit that king single up there, just, but the bed will probably be upgraded to a double bed soon enough. It's just storage on the mezzanine for now, but brainstorming... thought it could be used as a reading retreat or put that bed up there for guests once the double bed (thinking IKEA's Malm with the under-bed storage drawers). Just one young adult (20s) using the room. Between the wardrobe, drawers, sideboard and mezzanine there is plenty enough storage space. Drawers and sideboard will stay as is, but we are hoping to use this side of the room more wisely! A bit of a quirky space to get right! Thanks for your help everyone :) :).

I’m biased. But 2 pack by far. If it is applied correctly. There are quite a lot of cowboys in the industry out there just cutting corners to make a better margin. Choice of colours unlimited. Up to 5 gloss levels. And down the track a fresh up or change of colour if you wish. 2nd choice, Melamine. Some great colours available as well as textures and finishes. Now Acrylic. Mmm, where to start. Yes it does discolour. Theoretically clear acrylic should be colour fast and maintain water clarity. However given the fact this is a co extruded product, not a lot of thought was put into how UV stable the ABS was. The ABS, is what gives us the colour. More of an issue with the light colours as opposed to the dark and wood grains. Then there’s the edge tape. But I’ll give it rest now. As for Glad Wrap.?. But that’s just my opinion.
