Comments (7)I love this house because it is quite sculptural. Before you paint I would remove ALL the vegetation that is crammed up in front of the house. Declutter. I think the garage is a visual problem that needs to be dealt with. SO a brave solution would be to paint it all beautiful black...( a warm black (dulux Terrible Billy has warmth)...nothing with blue or green in it..they look cold) ...including the garage door, or do garage and left side of house black and middle section maybe a colour or a sexy grey. OR paint the whole thing a really good white. Be careful...some whites look like undercoat. Needs to be a warm white. Then you could paint the left wing another shade to distract from the garage. Tell us what you decide....good luck...See MorePOLL: Would you go black?
Comments (32)I love using dark colours in the right places and in truth, there really isn't a colour that is true black - that would be a none colour and one that can only be truly matched and equalled by its exact equal and opposite (white) for balance and a striking visual effect - like in this kitchen where plenty of natural light streamed in. When I design my colour palettes using "black" there is always an undertone of another colour to contrast or blend (like in the picture you featured here of the formal room at Rothesay). At Rothesay I used a prominent magenta and blue base amongst 8 other pigments which is why it appears to have a rich depth and acts to highlight the ornate ceiling that we painted in Aalto Gallery white. The trims give it contrast but the complexity of colour reflects and absorbs the red accents in the room. In Feng Shui "black" represents water and can be used in the South area of your home (on this side of the hemisphere) - this can be a particularly soothing effect. I used a near black with a brown/aubergine undertone in this bedroom that was once the place of non sleep and now definitely the opposite is in effect. I love using a base colour in my blacks to punctuate bright colours and jewel like tones - it feeds the soul! After all no adventure can be had by playing it safe - right?...See MoreThe busiest wall you've ever seen.... :/
Comments (28)Maybe I'm weird , maybe I'm lazy -- I liked that 'busy' look . Even more so after reading what you had to do to change it . And just me , but I find some irony in most people saying the tin didn't suit the period , but then you've turned the fireplace into a book case ! I assume the old air-con was biffed ( i.e. no value ) , and while I do like the new unit , just for my own interest I would have taken the old cover off and painted it a bright gloss red , and done the tin the same . If you don't like red , then go your favourite colour -- yellow or a nice green or blue . If your favourite colour is grey or off-white then I can't help you haha ! If that still looked naff , and you did all the work that you have , personally I would have added some character back in -- I would have 'recreated' the tin area in tiles . IMO even gloss white 150 x 150 would have looked pleasant and added interest without looking too busy , BUT again just me , I would have gone more for a period reddy burgundy , or an emerald green or mottled-toned blue -- I liked the tones in the tiles back in that era ! Obviously , you are happy with what you've done , and you're definitely not going to change it , but just outlining the lines I would have considered ....See MorePaint house exterior black?
