Washing Machine Plumbing

Hi All.

We are building a new home and I am designing the laundry.

My plan is to elevate my washing machine (front loader) and dryer about 900mm off the floor to avoid bending down to empty and fill them both.

My aim is to conceal ALL the washing machine taps and the waste hose that comes out of the washer and into the waste pipe. The waste hose will run behind the machine, under a bench and connect to the waste outlet under the laundry tub.

Are there any special considerations I need to take into account for the waste hose? In this planned layout, the washing machine (and therefore the waste hose) will be higher than the underbench waste outlet?

great idea but keep in mind that if the bottom of the machines is 90cm off the floor the standard top controls would be at about 1.8m..would it be more comfortable for the machines to be raised a little lower? ...some of the manufacturers offer a WM stand with drawer that might be worth considering as the machines might be too heavy for standard cabinets and condensor dryers are recommended to be on the floor because they're too heavy to be raised but, to answer your question, the standard waste pipe is already higher than the drains so there shouldn't be any problem with a raised installation but check with the manufacturers of the machines for specific written advice to show the plumber (eg you may need a longer hose?) and talk to your builder and plumber to make sure that your special installation is written into your contract as it's easy for any variation from standard to be overlooked

I had been wanting to raise my washer 400mm but then realised there is a limit to the length the washer hoses could be. It was in the manual, and I I raised them they wouldn’t reach my plumbing. Just something to check. I have a hamper between the washer and sink so had to pass that.
Also washers are very heavy so need good support under them, not just a standard cupboard.

do not put an external ducted dryer in a cupboard unless you plan to replace the cupboard very soon after you discover the horrible wet mildewed, possibly dangerous, result...only the manufacturer should be able to advise about this option. I'm very happy with a condensor dryer that sits nicely under my 60cm deep counter and only has warm dry air vented out the front .. great for keeping the room warm and also helps with drying clothes on an overhead rack...Manufacturers of washers and dyers should have on line installation instructions and/or contact details so you can obtain written confirmation of sizes and amount of space needed and/or some condensor dryers and washing machines can be stacked so the under counter option wouldn't be necessary and any difference in depth not so obvious

I need a washing machine which allows the waste water from the machine to be connected to a spigot on the waste water pipes under the laundry tub which is at 50cms. I would prefer a top loader but it seems that this will not be possible, however, does anyone know of a top loader which will allow me to connect to waste water at 50cms. If not, then I will need a front loader with the same needs. Re the front loader, can anyone recommend one with, if not a soak cycle, at least one which can take white loads including nappy san (ie, won't damage the drum) and do a long wash which might be enough. I want a machine which will take at least 2 queen size sheets and a duvet cover at the same time. I have also been wondering whether if I put a washing machine on a stand to raise it up whether that would be acceptable to then connect the waste water hose to the waste water pipe...

Thanks Dreamer for thoughts. The better half had come up with the design and as I am standing in there now with it all ripped out, I thought about leaving as is like you mentioned. inspection panel is for plumbing as that is mine pipe for unit above. Will just treat that as is now and be villaboard template without tilea over the top so sits relatively flush and tidy Width of shower recess would be about 800. Is the same width even if kept it as is now. No real gain. WM waste requires us to cement core floor and install. another reason why I’m on your page with leaving it.

It’s been too long since I used a top loader to really comment on them but being able to soak in them is a feature I miss. Having said that the gentleness of the front loader and the high speed spin probably makes the front loader my favourite. I wash the kids quilts and rugs in mine but have to take my King Size doona to a laundromat. When I upgrade my FL I’ll be upsizing to be able to fit the King size in and also be looking for a FL with the steam refresh function because that suits the way I live. There’s plenty of TL v FL articles on the web if you search. It comes down to how you live and wash.
