Please help to cover ugly fence!
Comments (14)I have a similar issue, although we only have 2.0m between our house and the timber fence. I'm going to try to do something similar to the following to at least block the main "view" into our windows: [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/van-adelsberg-grant-residence-contemporary-garden-portland-phvw-vp~6010853[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/van-adelsberg-grant-residence-contemporary-garden-portland-phvw-vp~6010853) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/mod-kensington-modern-garden-san-francisco-phvw-vp~5094505[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/mod-kensington-modern-garden-san-francisco-phvw-vp~5094505) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/mod-kensington-modern-garden-san-francisco-phvw-vp~5897343[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/mod-kensington-modern-garden-san-francisco-phvw-vp~5897343) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/lakewood-remodel-contemporary-garden-austin-phvw-vp~2299166[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/lakewood-remodel-contemporary-garden-austin-phvw-vp~2299166) I'm still not sure what plants to put in front of or around the timber privacy screens. We really like the look of pencil pines, but I'm not sure they're right for the climate (Brisbane, Queensland) or whether they will receive sufficient sunlight....See MoreExterior Design and House Type
Comments (19)If the home was built in 1938 it is not a Federation Bungalow. It is an interwar home (between the two world wars), with an art-deco influence. There would probably be art-deco style ceiling roses and cornices inside? This photo is a neat solution that would work well. The existing brick fence on the front boundary was maintained. A new taller steel fence was built about 600mm inside the boundary, which incorporated a gate. In this case it was a hinged gate, but a sliding, electric powered gate could also work. The space between the old brick fence and the new steel fence was planted out with a hedging plant, in this case a Pittosporum, and was trimmed to conceal the new fence. This saved costs as the original brick fence and footings did not have to be demolished - although it looks like somebody had a go with a car next to the driveway!...See MoreBackyard blitz, please help us to design our backyard, we have no idea
Comments (5)I would decide what you actually need in a backyard as a starting point, such as a clothes drying area, vegetable garden, sandpit, kids play area, BBQ, outdoor entertaining deck etc. Look at how the sunny spots and shady spots change during the day. Think about the balance between hard surfaces (like decking and paving) to soft surfaces, such as lawns and garden beds. Consider the relationship of the rooms at the rear of the house to the backyard with potential views, and vistas. Consider what is currently over the fence, and what you can do to disguise what you don't want to see (such as your neighbours ugly garage). Also consider if there is redevelopment potential next door that may overshadow or overlook your back garden in the future. Think of the functions of your back garden as a series of outdoor "rooms" and the relationship to each other, and to your house. Your drying area may be in a sunny spot, that isn't overlooked from your dining room, but not too far from the laundry door. If you have young kids you may want to be able to see their play area/sandpit from the kitchen. Locate your BBQ area, outdoor entertaining area which gets the afternoon sun and not too far from the kitchen. Or engage a landscape designer to help you get your thoughts and budget organised. You have lots of scope and opportunities with such a blank canvas. Comments (13)I know Michelle, wrought iron is what we wanted, but the cost is a killer The blade fencing quote is 8.5k, including the gate automation. I should have checked Stratco prices. They have nice/simple designs Hi Kate, the 1st photo looks good, hubby is working on garden bed on both sides of the fence, using our old plants from the same area, but would not be high enough to cover the fence I'm thinking of picking up the design of the window?? but husband said its tacky haha I should have until Monday to decide wether to go ahead with blade fence or change it Husband said if I'm not happy just go and change it - duh! :)...See Morejulie herbert
