Replacing balcony doors - what kind of trade?

Hi! First time poster here, so please forgive the rookie question.

I'm trying to replace my balcony doors into aluminium sliding or stacking doors. It's currently the old timber kind with floor to ceiling windows on one side and a swivel door on the other. What kind of trade should I be contacting to replace these? Would it be a builder or a carpenter?

I just hope your opening is wide enough for what you want. If you need to make it wider then you will also need to consult a structural engineer for a lintel design to span the wider opening before the builder starts.

You may want to do your research on stacker and sliding doors first to find a manufacturer that you like and tell your builder the colour and the manufacturer before he quotes. Don't leave it to your builder to decide as he will just get the cheapest.

Get a builder to quote if you are using aluminium doors. They have to be measured precisely and ordered by the builder (who takes a risk if he makes a mistake when measuring).

Do your research so you know what you want, and how it works, rather than get your builder decide based on what is easiest and cheapest to install.

agree separate trades . 1/ carpet is easy google and find an auction place like Fowles (Victoria ) sometimes they have off cuts so it's cheap and they usually have carpet layers that they can give you contact details 2/ painters 3/ hard floors same as carpet 4/ kitchen measure up your kitchen , work out your cupboards ie how many what you would like in your kitchen etc. once you've done that then can just get a cabinet maker to make it for you then an installer, electrician , plumber etc or else the kitchen people to oversee the whole project might be costly

Hi, I'd go for a black balcony to tie in your awesome black theme. Perhaps something with space for some plants to brighten the overall appearance of the house? What is the reason you want a Juliet balcony? Do those windows open right up and you need them for safety reasons? I love the overall facade, and apart from some landscaping and removing those external blinds - I'd leave it as is. Good luck

Hi Damster Damster. Anything that insulates against thermal transfer will also insulate against noise disturbances. A good double glazed window with an insulated frame and a high performance seal should reduce noise coming across the window by 60% or more. A uPVC frame will give you the best performance and will last the longest. But, it can be tricky to tell which uPVC supplier is the best to go with.
