We have just moved in and this is my kitchen. I love the yellow and the windows, but it’s not very functional. What would you do? Ps sorry about the mess!
Remove oven and Install under bench , this will provide more bench space. Install overhead cupboards across wall from where oven cupboard tower was, to window. Install a good pull out pantry full height system where existing tall cupboard is. I wouldn't say open the kitchen to the living. It appears that a open plan would not work for your lifestyle. And to remove fire may be not beneficial.
Measurements of kitchen space would be good for extra ideas.
The layout of the kitchen is very functional, it is storage that I think is the issue. Could you fill in one of the windows.. I know a terrible thing to say....and install over head cupboards.
Clean up and be ruthless at culling things you don’t really need. Include all the chaos on the fridge. We all have one extra utensil, pot, dish we have just in case or because we got given it. Be like Elsa and Let it go.
Replace curtains with roller blinds. This will leave window ledges available for storage.
Replace exhaust fan with a pull out range in an overhead cupboard.
As Kate said, you could keep the windows but install shelving across the window. It may be a bit tricky to anchor shelving though, as there is no wall or anchor point in the corner of the window. I do not think the kitchen is dysfunctional, it may be a perception of the space, because of all the stuff that is on the fridge and benches. Storage is the key.
Consider ceiling mounted shelving across the left window, but don't cover the window, and I agree with changing the curtains to roller blinds to allow storage on the sill.
The design is very economical and redesign wouldn't yield much extra space.
Consider installing functional inserts into the existing cabinetry, such as lazy susan in the corners or spice jar racks where appropriate. The pull out pantry "Dreamer" suggested is a great idea.
Ultimately de-clutter anything that you haven't used in 6 months, this will help keep the spaces easier to put things away and hence make the space bigger. Let it go!!
Pull out the oven wall tower and have an under bench oven. Install shelving across the open space where the cupboard use to be for storage. They are cheap from ikea. Get rid of those blinds and install roman shades. Remove one of the bottom cabinets and install a dishwasher. I am a maximalist so I love stuff, just organise and maybe cull some of the things that are not as appealing and replace or not have them. I would also update the benchtop.
Replace the pantry door and install drawers so you can easily access the back of the pantry.
