While I agree that the steps do not currently match the house and were an add on, I don't see why you can't make them work! Add Saltillo tile to the tops of each step, in keeping with what you already have. Then add Talavera tiles, in random patterns if you're funky, all matching on each layer of riser if you're more of an orderly person, or in the middle, which would be to have each riser contain the same pattern all the way around the whole step, but having each step in a different pattern. (I would make them match somewhat) Then, have a welder fabricate hand rails to continue from your upper porch rails, down the sides of each step, so elderly and young folks can still access your stairs. It will also keep the flow and the beauty of the steps in tact. Then, you might consider adding a few scattered tiles elsewhere on your porch to help tie in the whole look, like a Talavera tile-topped table, or maybe a row of tiles above the front door? Jacey, nice to see you are still here, many aren't after this length of time. I'm having a little chuckle here as when I originally read your post, my first thought was "move house", but I didn't want to sound so rude as to say so. It reminded me of my first house which was at the flat end of the street but the other end was very much "mountain goat territory" and the driveways reminded me of yours. After living in the homes for years, some spent mega amounts removing rock and excavating to create a garage more at road level and from there the stairs started zig-zagging to the front entry, new front entries were even created at a lower level, but the stairs still continued inside the house, there was just no escaping the climb. I wondered how you even got your wheelie bins up and down the drive. Hope you are enjoying your new home, long term I think you made a very wise decision.

I personally don't think the gardens and letterbox are too bad , and I'd concentrate on other areas . The 2 biggest sins IMO is the mushroomy trim in a few small spots , and the garage door . The gutters and barge boards I'd do in an apricotty orange as in will work with the bricks , upstairs and the roof colour . The rest that was mushroomy ( the small wallboard bits and the poles along the front ) I'd do in a crisp white . The garage door may look overdone and mixed periods if you change to a timber one ( cedar or similar ) , so as a first step I'd try and paint it the same muddy khaki brown tone as your bricks -- I don't think that would look too overdone -- it would all blend in hopefully . The gate over the left I'd do in charcoal , then I'd stand back and smile ! In time , you can update the plants , maybe even change and widen the driveway ( I personally have never liked that stamped concrete ) , but keep it all clean and fresh , with a little bit of orange to add personality !

You might want to consider rugs with dark patterns that can hide stains that you can’t get out. Similarly, you shouldn’t put a hardwearing and coarse rug in your bedroom as it will be uncomfortable under bare feet. Tencel is generally the better quality and more expensive of the two options, but both should be only reserved for living-rooms and bedrooms. PLANT BASED MATERIALS (JUTE, SISAL, SEAGRASS) There seems to be an increasing number of rugs made out of vegan, plant based materials such as Jute, Sisal and Seagrass. They’ve been used for hundreds of years, and although they went out of fashion in the 20th century they’re coming back as, unlike plastic-based materials such as acrylic and nylon, they are vegan and 100% natural, with small carbon footprints. They are cheap and hard-wearing, but very coarse, so good if you want a natural material for a high footfall area like a hallway or entrance way, but not great for anywhere you might be walking around barefoot. They are generally easy to clean, however, Sisial requires a special dry cleaning kit if it gets wet. COTTON There’s a very good chance you are wearing cotton right now – perhaps a soft cotton t-shirt or a nice warm cotton sweater. There’s a reason we use cotton so much – it feels great, it’s natural, cheap and easy to dye any colour you can think of. All this means it’s a great option for a new rug, especially for living rooms and bedrooms where you want to feel it under your feet. CONSTRUCTION Rugs come either in ‘High Pile’ or ‘Low Pile’. Because people don’t spend a lot of time in these places, we would recommend practicality and ease of cleaning over picking the most impressive – consider a low pile carpet made from Nylon, Acrylic, or plant-based materials. THE RIGHT CARPET FOR YOUR BEDROOM When you get out of bed in the morning you want to be able to push your toes into a warm and comfortable carpet that soothes your feet. That means the bedroom is the part of the house where you can choose the deepest, lushest and most comfortable carpet available. And, because the bedroom gets much less footfall than other rooms, you don’t have to worry too much about wearing through the material, so whenever possible, choose a high pile carpet and opt for cotton, wool, silk, Tencel or Kristal. When choosing a pattern or colour, go for something soothing – you probably don’t want the last thing before you go to sleep to be a bright yellow carpet with orange stripes. TIPS AND TRICKS As mentioned above, avoid carpets with looped weaves if you have cats and dogs as their claws can catch in the loops.
