Any suggestions for modernizing a house with EVERY internal wall being exposed brick, with timber ceilings (yes even the bathroom)? Looking to possibly purchase this house so furniture is not mine. And like most people, I'm on a tight budget too. Thank you.

Comments (20)My comment may be a little too late but I have designed many kitchens where it improvement in isolation would solve nothing so I would alwYs recommend thinking about and addressing the entire open space you are in when wanting to improve it. Your comments lead me to think perhaps you want to spend as little as possible while getting he biggest impact possible. I agree with many comments and think Ain't it the first answer. The kitchen cabinetry call all be painted easily as they are timber, the oven drew my attention, and would need to be a priority upgrade if ever to sell, it looks very old. So if nothing else, take. It out and the under cabinet and replace it with a freestanding, source online auctions, eBay or clearance warehouses you will find many to choose from, and a 900mm oven will make life easier, it will also give you an in line bench top height and expose some more backsplash, which is my next point of consideration. The brick here dominates your eyeliner, so using adhesive, apply fibre cement sheeting to the splash back and tile it in a light tile, if you use led lighting, under the top cupboards would be great as they would illuminate the bench top and splash back instantly making your kitchen feel brighter and ambient. Secondly, this new brightness your kitchen will have will contrast with the darker adjoining room, which will only make the dark seem darker, so you need to gradually address the adjoining room with something from the kitchen, and horizontal surfaces are a great place to start as the cover the entire area like a blanket, so the floor is tile, and difficult to change without major time or money, so on the ceiling, your beams are a beautiful feature and every room has a part of the architecture that will work to your advantage, here are yours, although th ceiling in between agreed is not great. You can buy timber battens from hardware stores very cheaply per mtr, the pine 45mm x 18mm will do, fix them to the inside of the beams along the longest sides, and then either nail to those lining boards, which I would paint white or the same as the kitchen cabinets. Or you can buy lining board sheets, it may be the single biggest cost, but will be the single biggest improvement thT you Nd future buyers will appreciate. Leave the beams timber to work with what you have. Lastly, the brick wall that comes from th kitchen onto the lounge area, I would paint them also, not in a white again the contrast will be too strong, perhaps in a warmer shade, like a coffee tone. This cladding I mention would also look great along the back of the kitchen breakfast bar, and you will double the size with these improvements. I know it involves cost, but with structural elements and big spaces, it always will cost you, just choose where improving will have the biggest impact and go for it. These are things you can do yourself, or use a handy person, so no real trades are needed to complete- save that for later! Good luck. Comments (6)I agree, your slate floor is actually a really nice slate. A little tip when choosing paint colours is to get the sample pots and paint a really large piece of cardboard. The colour blocking just highlights the interesting features of the house. I know the charcoal will work and the Grand piano is just a warmer white. You will need a warmer white to complete the slate. Other suitable whites will be China white and maybe Whisper white. Too white will not work with slate. My father and brother are painters and I choose the colours, still colours are a very personal thing, that's why I'm suggesting the cardboard idea. Comments (94)Just to confirm I have taken the great ideas presented here as advice only and have no intention to do some dodgy diy reno's. With the exception of a couple of quirky exposed timbers as you can see in my pictures there are no other exposed beams. As you can also see from the pictures there is a large roof space on the right (east) side of the house but the ceilings themselves are flat with a slight dip on the north wall. Based on my own personal experiences I would have to agree with Two's Company that there is a tendency towards rendered brick in WA (although there are still many exposed brick houses in my suburb) while double enclosed double garages are also highly desirable. I would also agree that toilets within the main bathroom and non traditional laundries may be considered unusual by many (but not all). Ensuites with toilets however are still very common. Also due to the nature of our work we would prefer the laundry separated from food/kitchen area. For a 4x2 house it is only around 155m2 excluding carport/alfresco which makes the rooms feel quite cramped, hence the desire to open up the family room. However, as Two's Company suggests we will need to first get a builder/eng in to check load bearing walls etc as this will undoubtedly affect what we can achieve within our budget. Having said that I still excited by many of your ideas and with luck hopefully can work some of them into the budget. Comments (0)We have a small two bedroom double brick house in Preston, VIC and we have a major humidity issue especially in two built-in wardrobes. Now I must point out that this house was built around 1925 and where the wardrobes are located use to be a veranda that fronted the master bedroom. This was built in before we purchased the house and we replaced the old wardrobes with the builtins in 2008. There is no obvious sign of mould, however we are having to empty out two tubs of damp rid a month of extracted humidity. We have central heating through the rood space and vents, and feel that the combination of humidity created by the heating and the rapid cooling due to the location of the builtin wardrobes (front of house) near the external walls maybe the culprit; but we have also noticed that there doesn't seem to be any subfloor vent grill where it was bricked in. As you can see from the images, the window on the left side behind the tree, is the room in question, and I recently removed a whole bunch of plants in the hope that it would provide a dryer and well ventilated area around the window. Not yet sure if this will make any difference. I am in between employment and my wife works in retail, so money is tight and that's why we are reaching out to the Houzz community in the hopes that you can assist us in addressing this humidity issue with an affordable resolution....See Morebolst

But the iconic style of this home should be taken into consideration.
It would be a pity to change the style, without taking into account the icon that it is.
Below are a few photos of how it could look with white walls. As oklouise said, you could paint the walls. And another showing a home of the same 1970's style.
