Comments (18)Good luck wincymeow. I have a similar dilemma and it is not an easy one to solve without taking away from the "grand" look of a walk in shower. I am considering the extreme option of just removing the window and having tiles along that wall. The only other alternative I can see for you is to settle for the telephone box analogy (it did make me smile when you said that because I can see you think similarly to me in what you want to achieve) or to pay the expense of putting in a different type of window that sits high enough or narrow enough to not receive water splashes from the shower or to go with the option oklouise has suggested. I really hope it works out for you and you manage to achieve the dream ensuite you are hoping for.....( for my own sake, I almost feel like the more mental energy i put into the bathroom, the greater my expectation on its outcome and what i am hoping for, which is definitely not a good thing). Its a pity that you can't move any of the plumbing. I think if you are unable to make any changes to the window, then oklouise first suggestion is a good one - changing the orientation of the shower. (The only real negative with the layout that you have to stay with is that the door opening is in front of the toilet so it is the first thing you see, but I guess depending on whether you make the vanity area the feature or the tiles above the shower the feature, you can draw the eyes away from the toilet based on what you do. I think the changed orientation of the shower is a good compromise and depending on what vanity and feature tiles you use, the bathroom should look really nice because even your mirror will reflect the window and whatever is outside....See MoreHelp! Comments (41)answering your questions: change the sliding door to a bench height sliding window and use the salvaged sliding door in the western end of the dining room where the best entry position is for the deck, you MUST have a proper legal drains do not consider anything else...the drain pipe for the garage laundry can be on top of the concrete floor, behind the washing machine and through the sink cabinet and/or under built in storage and only needs a few cms not a whole floor and no stepped up area that you would see or trip over.. the laundry can't be in a separate room as there's not enough space for a separate laundry without compromising the size of the garage...a laundry cupboard 80 cm deep is enough for the washing machine (allowing for the drainage pipe) you could use the old line cupboard to store anything you want but it's not cost effective to change, the entry foyer is already as big as in many modern homes and there's generous flatpac biw space in the small study.... the family bathroom is 2380 x 2370 (ie the old study minus 1m for hall way and wall thickness and, arranged exactly as shown to allow for the wide window there should be space for a bath up to 1800 x 750, vanity about 1200 x 500 and shower space 1200 x 800 and leftover space makes the small linen cupboard with the door deliberately opening towards the shower to use the back of the door for hanging racks for towels and clothes....btw i understood your priority was maximizing separate sleeping rooms and minimising costs...my last plan has five separate sleeping rooms plus the lounge with sofa bed totalling sleeping places for at least 10 people plus the potential for bunks in the garage so you need to decide what is most important and where you're prepared to compromise...See MoreShutters or not?
Comments (26)I have an Edwardian villa I restored 7 years ago and my master bedroom is on the street front as well and not that light. I have 2 bay windows in the house. I struggled with privacy too (I can can sit in m bed on Sunday morning with a coffee and see people walking their dogs!) and when I go to get changed I don't want to pull curtains and change in the dark. Also my lounge bay has gorgeous stained glass work that I didn't want to cover, Btu I have a beautiful front garden that I want to be able to see. I looked at several solutions including shutters and had quotes etc, For the bedroom I decided on roller blinds, sheers and also a beautiful silk curtain. Sheers for privacy and to control the sun, roller blinds for darkness add a bump lined curtain for added insulation and sound proofing, The Lounge: I used sheers and a full length curtain with bump lining. I also have placed my curtain tracks quite high up to complement the high ceilings. I decided on this as sheers give you privacy, control the sun; curtains give you insulation and also soften a room; both options can be pulled back off the window so that you can appreciate and see the window; they also complement the style of these older homes, If I was to do this again there are amazing thermocell blinds that can be attached at the bottom meaning that you have the option of pulling then from the bottom up. If you pulled them halfway up, his gives you privacy but still lets the light in.The have amazing insulation properties and they give you a cleaner look if that is what you are after. If I was dressing the windows again I would definitely look at this option as an alternative, I really encourage you to not install shutters or wooden venetians. I think they can darken a room and be heavy looking. I know lots of people install them in villas but I personally don't think they are the best or only option. PS just re-looked at your photo: I would recommend a sheer and curtain on a double track, Place the track higher; make sure the track is wider enough that the curtain can stack off the window; consider a wide heading tape (eg 160 mm is what I used to suit the proportions of the room and curtains). ....See Moredreamer
