Advice for renovation on Californian Bungalow

Hello! We are a family of 5 living in this 3bd Californian Bungalow. We are currently working on plans to build upstairs into our roof space (ideally two beds + a bathroom) - however, after having given it all some serious thought, I guess I am wondering whether it makes more sense to try to work within the current structure to try a more modest renovation to get what we need. At the very least, we need one extra bedroom and a separate toilet. We also don’t have much storage space.
Some extra info - we are constrained on the block - 350sq and the space is all front garden, there isn’t much room to extend out the back, unless it was a small bump out.
We do have a meeting with a building designer coming up - I guess I’m just trying to figure out if there are any other options because upstairs sounds wonderful but also quite an undertaking. I am also not creative, so am struggling a bit with a ‘vision’.
Any advice would be very welcome!
Thanks in advance 😊
