Any thoughts on how to improve this area, wondering if we should extend the artificial grass around the pool, we may need to get rid of the frangipani as it is not in good condition, what to do outside the windows? Thank you

It looks like the current paving links an external gate with a front door and defines pedestrian traffic flow. There would be no way I would replace this paving with artificial grass. Hard paving has more longevity, and easier to maintain than artificial grass. I would even consider replacing the artificial grass with matching paving for a more consistent, lighter and easier to maintain look. Introducing a timber deck is going to make a small space look visually busier (and need maintenance).

You have a complex problem in that you have a small area, that needs to perform a multitude of functions and some muddled thinking. I would engage a professional designer to help you clarify your thoughts and set a clear direction that is responsive to the multi-nature character of the space, and your lifestyle.

Have you considered planting outside your fence with the golden canes. (Hardy enough to re-position) Councils don't usually mind. Privacy with visual depth to them and then you can plant something more fun in your small garden space without the issue of palm roots stealing all the nutrients, A flowering vine on your mesh fence would be the fastest privacy screen.

After staring at your pics a few times I think I've figured out what's bothering me. The garden bed sticks forward. If you need it for the size of plants in the ground it might work but if you're only going to have pots you can line the edge up with the wall of the house I think? What is the depth of the garden bed? Colour and placement of the pots. The pots look terracotta and the brickwork looks more reddish, is that right? It doesn't look like it goes together. Maybe you can use those pots somewhere else where they aren't right beside the brickwork and get some pots for that location which are either darker and match the trims of the house or are lighter and contrast with the house more. I think the pots need to somehow relate to the windows. If that room could use some privacy or shade you could put two pots in front of the windows. If you want to preserve the view out then you could put three pots against the brickwork. The mulch. It looks too low for the edging. (What is the edging?) The colour, like with the pots, doesn't look like it goes with the rest. I'd go black pebbles or something light in a similar hue to the stone foundation feature. Or maybe scoria?

The most effective landscaping for selling is to make it as tidy as possible so the new owners are not daunted by the maintenance work they are taking on. if the gravel under the water feature is only sitting on bare soil there would be no need to remove as it should help add a drainage layer and soil and groundcovering plants could be added over the top of the gravel BUT if there is plastic sheeting under the gravel (which is possibly why it doesn't drain well) you will need to remove the plastic or at least punch numerous holes through the plastic to improve drainage (just push sections of the gravel aside and punch holes with a garden fork, (add a handful of claybreaker or soil wetting compound) push the gravel back, move aside another section punch holes etc etc) not especially difficult just tedious ... then smooth out the gravel and cover with some good soil to suit your chosen ground cover, as suggested by Julie...BUT if there is concrete under the gravel then it needs to be broken up to create drainage OR check out no dig gardens for techniques for adding growing layers over the top of impervious surfaces...or consider growing your groundcover in pots of soil buried in the gravel

Thanks for your reply, I have been debating getting a designer as I have lots of ideas but think it is time bite the bullet and do it. The frangipani is the most beautiful one I have ever seen when it is in full bloom so we should try and save it. Thanks again.
