How to reconfigure to add a meals/activity room

Hello everyone

Any ideas on how I can reconfigure the long narrow back area of my house? It needs to inc a kitchen, and a meals area/activity room. We are happy to lose/use the bathroom but need to keep a toilet and laundry in the space. Thoughts?

The width of the space is less than 3m.

The living and dining area are great but i have 3 sons who are nearing teenage years and we need a small get away space.. (mainly for me!)

is there another bathroom somewhere else? ..please post plans for the whole house and include dimensions for all the rooms

We are adding 3 bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. The existing floor has a master and a box room attached that will be converted into an ensuite. Our only area of confusion is how to make a second living area in the kitchen meals area. Originally we hoped to go up with 4 bedrooms and make the downstairs master a 2nd lounge. But we simply cannot afford to.

Hi thanks for the reply. if it was just us 2 adults then an alfresco/kitchen would be a an ideal investment. The exercise is good though no doubt about that! The main issue is handling the kids. for example its a nice day and they want to play outside but i need to cook up some food for the week. then kids are stuck indoors or on the balcony….under my feet. or they are playing happily outside but its lunch time or dinner time…..back upstairs playtime os over etc. then the washing is done and needs to be hung up - but they are now watching a DVD up stairs. These are some of the day to day nuances. Its doesn't just flow as it does with adults….. My thoughts are that a small (Ikea type) kitchen would cover us for day to day living but in future also double as the outdoor entertainers kitchen to complement the BBQ area we have. plus it could also be turned back to a bedroom if we needed to. the bedroom exenstion has been on the cards anyway as we will need a guest bedroom soon now we have 2 kids. i will post a floor plan soon just have my hands full today ;)

emerald..don't know how you full time mum does it..I wouldn't be able to cope lol I only work part time and yet on the days I work I don't even look after myself properly lol. took the kids to Yum Cha today so I bought groceries at Melb Central before hopping on the train back .. just making a stir fry tonight..was going to have stir fried noodles..turned out my Hokkien noodles are expired..this is the reason why I don't buy stuff beforehand lol so will wing it and have with rice..one wok wonder with some scallops from the freezer.. my kids are easy they don't ever whinge about what I cook they know better..as sometimes I don't cook at all lol

some great idea's already suggested. What ever you do you have to get rid of the wall between the kitchen and current dining space and I would make this entire area, one big floating bench with seating / stools you could even continue to shape to form a corner so you had additional storage underneath but open up the space so the view through is not blocked. I was also looking at the family room and living rooms, I would swap them over and some how make the entry front door more of a directional space but still allow it to be it's own space so you can store shoes, coats bags etc, without walking straight in to the living room(s). What ever you do, remember it is cheaper not to move plumbing and I think the kitchen is in a good space.

Hi all as an update, we now own the unit (subject to settlement) and have been in with a builder. The discrepancy in the original kitchen measurements is that the floorplan has been incorrectly drawn. Attached is my update, as you can see the kitchen wall is not flush with the adjoining wall, hence the difference in width. Now we do really need ideas!!!! We are thinking about a kitchen like this too with similar flooring.

dimensions for laundry, kitchen meals area are 7.1m x 2.8m.

what about the dining room...we need to be able to see how the adjoining rooms fit together please include the plan for the rest of downstairs eg what is on the other side of the toilet?? and do you plan to include any sliding doors out to the terrace

How about putting the laundry into the bathroom. Than Youre bringing the kitchen closer to the dining area where the meal area is right now. You can think about opening the kitchen up to the dining if wanted. The former laundry and part of the kitchen becomes a nice getaway are for you that is still close to the kitchen but out of the main pathways in your house. Put in a nice big window and door to the porch and you have a great area for yourself. You can also close it up to the kitchen if you want.
