What furniture do you have already? Or are you buying new furniture?

There isn't really anything in those pictures to give guidance. Are you still to buy window coverings too? If you don't have anything and are starting with such a neutral space you can go in whichever direction you wish. What sorts of colours and materials do you like? Is there an antenna wall socket yet?

Where have they put the aerial point for tv?

@Kate - Hey Kate, I think it is going to be next to the alfresco door which is exactly opposite of kitchen island.

I think you'll need to measure pieces carefully but imagine skinnyish rectangular table inbetwen laundry and door and then a sofa with a chaise with its back to the kitchen bench and spaced did that it lines up just past the window. I'd place a large rug on that sideas well. place the tv next to the sliding door.

I think it's good to start with what you need from the space functionally, and design from there.

How many people in your household? Would you commonly entertain a lot of people, have big family dinners etc?

Is there enough storage elsewhere, or do you need extra from this space?

Are you a family that like to sprawl out for the evening on a comfy couch for movie nights, or will a tidy sofa and a couple of club chairs do?

Small spaces have to work hard, and it's good to have versatile furniture. If it were me I'd look out an extendable circular dining table, and pop it in front of the laundry wall. They'll comfortably sit four when closed and take up very little space; but when open they can seat up to 8. This is a lovely vintage one, but somewhere like ikea does a decent cheapie.

This is not an uncommon layout in a new build. An easy way to get inspiration is to have a look at the websites of major project builders ie Metricon. They pay designers to pick out and layout the furnishings. You may see something you like.

Given that you are unsure of your style direction you need to spend some time collating looks you like. Go through pictures here on Houzz and Pintrest. Save everything you like. After 100 of so you will see common themes of what you like and you can narrow down from there.

What is in the second photo, a power point? And you think the tv socket is going to be in that same wall? Then that is where the entertainment unit goes. Is that the only power point? When you buy your entertainment unit choose something which allows access for plugging in the vacuum cleaner. Unless you have a rechargeable vac which doesn't need a power point. With hard flooring perhaps you will mop more than vac. Although if you want to soften or warm the space you might have a rug?

I didn't understand "combination of bright and neutral colours" until I looked at your Idea Book. You have some lovely pictures there. Do you have any artworks yet? That might influence which colours you repeat throughout your space. The grey sofas are probably the most versatile and timeless, and something like that might be the easiest to source in a size and configuration to suit your needs.

Looks like a power point and a gas bayonet on this wall. So a tv unit would have to allow for access to these.

Appropriate size furniture is important. You need to go to the shops with a measuring tape. Then go back home and use blue painters tape on the floor, marking where furniture would be placed. Check that there is walking space around furniture. A lot easier to move tape, than try and get a refund on furniture purchases.

dreamer: Thank you so much... I loved the blue tape idea and I am exactly going to follow this. We were thinking about getting two 2seaters ...... just have to see if we can accommodate everything nicely.... liked the sofa below from Nickscali.... I always wanted to get recliners as we love getting cozy up and watching movies at home....but not sure if the space will allow us :(

If you get recliners remember to tape the floor (great idea!) allowing for the reclined position. You don't want to put a dent in the wall on your first movie night. A more flexible idea to maximise use of space could be storage ottomans, which also provide extra seating for parties. You can have neutral sofas and introduce something brighter in the ottomans, and that's easier to change if you get tired of the colour or pattern.

Hi, if you go for cooler paint tones this will make the walls recede and so feel bigger. The mega DIY retailers with big paint departments and specialist paint retailers usually have colour specialists and/or interior designers available in store for no cost to get advice. Remember it’s better to paint swatches onto large pieces of cardboard than directly onto the wall, so you can move to different positions in the room to see how the different lighting conditions will affect it. Lighting is another key consideration that can make the space feel bigger or small. Houzz has some good lighting articles and good lighting retailers know their stuff too.
