Painting a Californian Bungalow

Well the time has come to treat our 1926 Californian Bungalow to a new lick of paint.

But before we do that we have a local builder replacing any dodgy woodwork.

Dilemma is the paint scheme. we are thinking woodland grey for baseboards and facia

A light Grey from the Haymes range, a eucalypt green for the window surrounds and gable trim, and a strong modern white for the windows.

Woodland Grey is a nice soft med Grey with a green highlight so should go well, keep the grey in the same tonal range so your windows pop. A photo might help us provide more specific advice, noting we will all have diff opinions

there is a beautiful green painted cali bungalow up the road from me, it has a dark green roof and the weatherboards are done in a paler green, with a darker green around the windows and trim. It sounds funny but it looks really lovely, all about the tones of green. I do think the grey white combo is beautiful too, and don't think it will make house look cold, its quite a subtle colour scheme. I have seen period houses painted those colours and they look really nice. Thinking of repainting our Californian bungalow in that combination, we have a dark red roof though, so I may go with a bluish grey?,

You have a fantastic period home and the colours you have selected are following contemporary fashion trends. However your terracotta tiled roof and chimneys are very orange, and the greys you have selected will make them see even more orange. I would be looking to the grey/greens to counterbalance the strength of the terracotta. Just remember that the fashionable greys of today are the daggy mission browns of tomorrow, especially when used on a period home like yours. This is why the current colour scheme looks so bad - as it is not original and was probably done in the 1980's. What rooms are on the northern side of the house? You’ll make more use of outdoor seating if it is easily accessible from inside, and you have the right aspect for a passive solar design. Carefully plan a pergola to allow winter sun but block summer heat, and add a deciduous climber to assist.

How do you know that the hallway would of been through the middle of the home. A lot of California bungalows had the bathroom directly in line with the front door. Standard four front rooms, consisting of two bedrooms, lounge and kitchen with table in the middle of the kitchen. I remember growing up with my grandparents having exactly that. There home was built in 1932 the similar period as yours. So I don’t think the owners botched the extension, they just utilised the existing bathroom as a WIR, and installed all new plumbing in the new rear extension. It would of been a cheaper option. With the fireplace in your master bedroom in the room on the back left, that would of been the kitchen/diner. This plan is an original home currently for sale, which has not changed since built in 1930, it still does not have an inside toilet.

I assume the picture is your place now ? You are basically going the same , just slightly updated . Nothing too much wrong with that , keeps it period and in proportion .

I'd change a couple of things , personally , while still keeping in that colour range .

The gable timbers I'd go a stronger grey green -- see how much 'better' Julies 1st and 3rd pictures look with a stronger colour !

And I love the orange roof and the red bricks with the orange tinge , and I assume the orange roof on the left is yours too ( not your neighbours ? ) , I'd be tempted to do the window sills and front door in that same tone , with the window surrounds in crisp white against the woodland . Modern but period at the same time , and ties everything in .
