Design Dilemma Kitchens Building a Home

Kitchen bench and cupboard colour

Hey all!
We are building our first house and I am having the hardest time picking benchtop and cupboard laminex colours!

I have attached a pic of our floor plan to show the kitchen orientation. The exterior wall faces north and we have a window splash back going in there along with a bench height servery window over the sink.

We are having a mid coloured wood vinyl flooring in there which we are still to decide and I am wanting to go for more grey/whites then creams. I am tempted to go all white but am worried about it being too white, could you spam me with your marble look laminex benchtops or even light grey or concrete look benchtops to inspire me?

Oak can really warm up a Grey white scheme. This is is bathroom but will give you idea. I have lexicon on wall between windows with vivid white trim. Could have gone 1/2 lexicon

Thanks for that Kate! I love the look you have in there! I have been eyeing off those subway tiles as well and wondering what they would look like so that’s great to see!
I do really like that oak vanity too. Its a beautiful colour!

I'd suggest that the first thing on the agenda would be to come up with an actual design. If there are going to be big changes, you might want to think about a kitchen design specialist. Once you have your design, decide on a budget. That will tell you roughly whether you're looking at granite countertops, caeserstone, corian or laminate. Same with cabinetry: everything is a function of price. By all means, have a good look around kitchen places to see what sorts of surfaces are available, and what appeals to you. And don't forget appliances. Ultimately, though, most of us are constrained by budget.

subject to correct measurements and to improve proportions of the kitchen and pantry access my suggestions include removing the fridge alcove to add cavity sliding doors from kitchen into the laundry and walk in pantry, increasing the space in the walk in pantry, adding a tall cabinet with storage to enclose the fridge, replacing the tall pantry cabinet with corner base cabinets and wall storage to increase counter space and replacing the old island with a new oblong island with sink, dw and knee space for stools (NB it may be possible to recycle the old cabinet doors, panels, sink, dw and taps into the new cabinets)

Yes, using the same Dekton benchtop material as a splash back gives a clean, understated look, so the splashback is not a feature. This can't be done with products like Caeserstone with a gas cooktop, but Dekton will be fine. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls

These textured subway tiles are the hi gloss cheapies from national tiles. There are some really lovely more expensive textured tiles that I would use in kitchen.

I was thinking white marble laminate...but you see black edges so went black with a mirage texture, French oak drawers, white around fridge , oven, and black cupboards under sink.

Splashback marble laminate.( black edges)

Ignore floors, still to do. But we had black Windows so the black works.

House before this I did burnished wood bench, a gloss breakfast bar ( oriental something.) and gentle beige units ( deep white)
So many laminates ay!!
