Ceiling vented range hood problem

We have a 1995 double storey home with the kitchen centrally located on the ground floor. The range hood is ducted into the ceiling cavity which means when we cook with a wok or high heat the fumes go through the range hood into the ceiling cavity and then come back into the kitchen through the downlights.
Has anyone else had this problem? Would love to know how they’ve dealt with it.

research recirculating and/or down draft kitchen exhaust systems...we have a Miele range hood that recycles the air back into the same room after cleaning the air through washable filters but ideally the air should be exhausted outside and the downdraft system might suit if you have access under the floor

Thank you oklouise. Unfortunately we are on a slab so the down draft option is not possible. We will start researching the recirculating option.

I'm about to put a cooktop on the 2.3 x 900 peninsular (island with only one free end ( in my new galley kitchen. I am using an induction top so it can be fitted flush with the benchtop surface, allowing me to use the whole area as benchtop when not in use. I intend to have bar stolls on the living room side for entertaining. My joiner has suggested making a beautiful, thin timbercover to go over the glass induction surface for added protection. I just need to decide on down draft induction hob or a ceiling casette. My main aim is to remove the smelly cooking smells from my unit. The smell from one evening of cooking indian chicken curry currently lasts at least a week! Any advice?

I think the fridge is in a great spot - you need it to be near the walkway so people can grab something from the fridge, without invading your space. I totally agree with keeping the services out of the island bench. I would allow 800mm between the stove and sink as you are always jumping between the two when cooking and it will minimise the amount of water getting spilt on the floor. You should make sure the dishwasher is on the far side of the sink to avoid clashing between any one stacking/unpacking dishwasher and someone cooking. If you put the sink in the pantry with all you dishes it can be really inconvenient for a family that is trying to interact with the kids. I like a pantry for storage and running a mixmaster to muffle noise in the living space. If you can place the dishwasher on the bench behind the pantry that will help. Allow 1200 mm between the bench and the opposite bench/cupboard.

Could you swap the fridge with the wall oven, going by your photo both fridge and Wall Oven would fit side by side. I would definately have the fridge on the cook top wall and not on the other side of the kitchen. I see by the photo that the timber beam could be in the way, I would speak to your plumber who should have a simple solution on ducting the range hood. A simple one built into a special cabinet above the cooktop can recirculate or be ducted outside by either exposed stainless tube for your industrial/country look or have the ducting boxed in, the ducting can be flexable so no problem avoiding beams.

Divinefeeling, if you have the asbestos people in, remove as much as you can for a clean slate. It will be under Lino, behind tiles etc. then you can move the electrical points and plumbing where you want them, install overhead cabinets etc. . Old house you will prob need to replace the wiring and plumbing anyway. siri plan will allow you to later open up the wall to the living for the open plan that is so popular, great to stage costs.

If there isn't a duct leading somewhere it's not ducted. Venting into the cavity doesn't sound right? Perhaps it was permissible when originally built? Our first house had a simple exhaust fan, of the type also used in bathrooms, above the stove and it went straight into the ceiling. That wasn't unusual in cheaper homes in those days. But these days kitchen exhausts should be recirculating or ducted externally to avoid build-up of potentially dangerous residues. In your situation recirculating sounds the most straightforward option. Alternatively you might be able to run the ducting out a side wall but the longer the ducting the less efficiently it works. Is it possible your rangehood has been installed incorrectly? We installed a rangehood in the 90's which could be configured as recirculating or as ducted and It took a few attempts to get the thing working properly.

Thank you macyjean. Apparently installation requirements have changed since 1995 and this wouldn’t be allowed now. We had it checked some time ago to make sure it was installed correctly. We will be doing a lot of reading about the recirculating option.
