I actually like the fireplace. Though it’s hard to tell from your photo (image a bit blurry) I think I would paint the surface behind the artwork to white/off white, change the light above the fireplace and the fan to black fixtures. Also change the shelves on the same wall to longer, real timber shelves and add a big floor rug, also a different lounge will make a big difference ie. L shaped or with armchairs added. Good luck.

Thanks Mandy. This is the real estate photos so not our furniture but I like your ideas and will definitely take your ideas on board when we move in. It’ll be a blank canvas so a lot to play with :)

Everything else is so bland, white and neutral, and the fireplace is the only thing that has any character. It would be a pity to smother the only element in the room that has character. I would be looking to either keep it, or introduce some stone.

Can you reorient the room to have the tv on the wall to the left of the fire, making the fire a more central feature and then allowing you to have more of an outside view rather than the lounge having its back to the outside? I think this and having some rugs ect in the room that compliment the rustic nature of the fire would help bring the room to life and improve the feeling.

Hi Georgina, oh that’s a good idea for the outside view. Would you suggest putting the TV on the wall above the fireplace? Or in the corner next to it? We currently have a 3 seater & 2 seater grey fabric couch, could potentially get an arm chair or 2. And will also have big rug & coffee table :)

It’s hard to know the size of the walls from the pic but you might want to do a dining table on the left off the kitchen bench and then the tv on the right and orientate the lounge/s around the fire and tv area. Depending on size of room and furniture size you have a few options other than the one in the picture. Good luck and enjoy your new house!

Hi Kate, floor plan below, it’s quite hard to see but that family area is 6.5 x 7.5. We will be able to take more measurements when we move in but this is all we’ve got at the moment
