Help choosing plants
Hi!
I live on the back of quarry land and have started cleaning up my back yard. I’d like advice on what plants I could grow in this hard dry soil on a hill
around the trees? I’m a complete beginner so any advice would be great. I plan on ripping up the area behind the pavers and putting down a small patch of grass for my dogs. Other than that, I’m open to suggestion. Thank you!!!

Comments (54)@fianou, Thank you for your kind words, I agree it's coming along, although not everyone knows that we've been building this home for 8 years now, using only our own money as humble farmers!!! We live in a tiny but comfortable7 square, (roughly) relocatable home and I personally can't wait to get into my new home with all the room and room to put everything in it's place!!! Right now all my posessions are boxed or wraped and in storage in various locations here on the property like our woolshed and an old caravan, as well as things stored in my mother's home a few kms away and with the home having just been sold, means I will have to move this furniture here and add to the mountain of things already in storage!! I'm sorry to say and hope I don't offend, that I don't have an affinity with hanging pots and plants and hubby would literally "cringe" at the thought of growing a vine up our new posts ha-ha I have got a pair of large pots either side of the front door , visible in the photo, housing Wisteria's that I hope to be able to keep tamed and they shoud look lovely when in flower. I originally planned to have about 20 standard roses along the front of the home but they are too much work I've decided and more often than not look quite shabby at certain times, especially when they are dormant, so instead, I have decided to plant several standard grevilleas in a nice stone mulch with a brick border as is the rest of my garden for easy mowing. I actually have quite a large garden but mulch is definitely the way to go and I have used a few different types of stone mulch, as well as tree mulch and woodchips and this reduces my weeding workload, the bain of all gardeners. I'm almost 60 and want to enjoy my home and garden but do not want it to become a burden but should I ever consider a hanging basket, perhaps indoors, I will be reminded of you!!! ha-ha Cheers, Barbara...See MoreNeed help on choosing type of Blind
Comments (12)Not sure why Helioscreen said that the 3m may sag as they have blinds up to 4.2m wide - but the tube is a heavier duty tube (120mm diameter). We have installed blinds from Vertilux with 3.2m, 3.4m and 3.6m widths without any sagging - but you need to choose the right fabric. Comments (17)Your kitchen is a good size but not huge so I would go with gloss white to match in with your lovely fridge. All white appliances. Light coloured bench top in the grey range. Backsplash, I'd go to tile expo, choose something you love and add some colour behind the stove, the rest of the splashbacks behind the sink etc in white subway tiles. Comments (24)Why not have a look at the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten. They have a simmilar look to some of the oddle crosses. They are active, friendly and low shedding. They are also not breed to excess and are rarely if ever dumped. They are a lot less than the cost of some of the oddly crosses, and when you buy from a registered breeder there are lots of advantages over the back yard breeders. 3 years agoOkay that's a pretty good spot then because you have afternoon shade, hot afternoon run is what kills most things in Brisbane. Given 5hrs of sun a day you could plant ixora which is a common and popular hedging plant in Brisbane. It's very pretty and low maintenance. They are like the azalea of the tropics.
You also have the option for fruiting shrubs such as feijoa, grumichama and coffee trees (which are really a shrub as they don't exceed 2mts in most cases). All three are very ornamental shrubs with pretty flowers, coffee is jasmine scented and produce edibles. All three are low maintenance although you will have to truck a fair amount of soil in because the exposed soil there doesn't look very good. Don't worry that's cheap from a landscaper and they usually offer a premium garden mix that you can just dump and plant right into.
You will also get away with crotons which are a popular garden specimen in brisbane as long as you plant it in the most shadey spots. Crotons are slow growing (no pruning necessary for years) colourful and easy care.
Birdsnest ferns are another option. Despite being a fern they are very hardy, can survive droughts and irregular watering, can take the sun and also grow to about 1.5m wide. They are non-toxic to dogs also. Could look spectacular under your lily pilys for a native rainforest look. You can get an indoor sized one for around $20 but they are good investment as they are long lived and easy care and create a stunning garden. Many different varieties are available from curly leaved to wide leaf.

I would add plenty of compost to your soil before you start planting, that way everything you plant will have a great chance , look at viburnum, look for interesting foliage and colour to create a great look, a personal favourite is dietes , tough , flowers are exquisite, pick out a few you love and mass plant for a very stylish look
