Design Dilemma Living Room

Best layout for this room

This room drives me crazy. Glass windows and sliding door down one long side. Fireplace at one end. Stairs at the other end. We are painting the walls Berkshire white in the near future. Any suggestions on furniture layout?

Jacqueline Macho, I agree the sink between the two pantries would be too dangerous. I would check the measurement for your work area between the sink and cooktop. As you have a large cooktop and sink between the fridge and oven...is there enough room to do all the food prep? I love a clean island and have never liked the idea of having any cooktop on an island as it seems too dangerous. A large sink takes up too much room on an island, especially if you’ve forked out for lovely stone or granite. I have for my new build, which we have been in for a month now, put in a small round bowl. I’m glad I did as I use it for food prep, and it has filter water for drinking. It doesn’t compromise the look or use of our island. I have a large and deep sink in the butlers for doing the washing up. I only have one dishwasher...yes folks just one. As my benches are 950mm high I opted for an Asko xxl....they are taller than others. After renting a house with a fisher and paykel dish drawers, I swore never to have them in our new build. So I personally can’t recommend them. Others might like them. Kitchens cost so much that’s why we obsess over them.

What height does the window start? You need to make sure that there will be enough height for a mirror so that a tall person can see their head in the mirror. We had a similar dilemma wth a window above the vanity but the window is quite high. Here is a pic....... I like the vanity under the window if height allows with the toilet to the right as you walk in.

Your lounge chairs before were too chunky for the space so the backing and arms on the tan couch were good for your room. Having a corner lounge only gives you the one option of were to place it and depending on the length it might be to big. Take the rug away and move everything out and mark out a floor plan with painters tape. Those two wing arm chairs are lovely and you should try to utilise them in your layout. You need something on the window wall to balance out the room, I'm not saying a couch but maybe the armchairs or an ottoman or a hall table that has thin legs and the light still passes through. Most photos pictured above are of large rooms and trying to replicate it in a smaller area is hard with the limited furniture options we have in Australia within a reasonable budget. But having anything within that area that is too chunky will look cluttered and claustrophobic. Measure your room and buy pieces according to how you live. If its a family only room fill it anyway you want. If you are having guests, personally I hate sitting close to others so a sectional wouldn't be ideal as I know I'm not the only one who doesn't like sitting with others too closely.

You have too much in the room. Do you need to keep the TV? How many people do you need to seat? Is there a budget for new furniture or will you work with what you have? Ps love the doggo.

Umm , I'm trying to be polite , but it looks like a 1970's flat !

The floor is quite nice . I hate painting brick , and I don't think I have ever suggested it , but please paint the fireplace haha .

So Berkshire White walls -- that looks quite a dirty white to me . You want it warm and lived in ( crisp white would be too clinical IMO ) , but why not get a bit more like an English white or Off-White or Napkin -- warm , without too much yellow or blue though . The two end walls are a bit too beigey IMO , a 'halfway' tone would be warm without looking old .

The fireplace painted the same , or get creative -- charcoal or khaki or even a light bronze dabbed on to give a bagged look ? Possibly leave the mantelpiece exposed wood if its pleasant looking .

Change the curtains , probably take a couple of the pics away and spread the rest around , the lounge suite is okay , the rug looks nice , everything is sort of okay but mismatched . Sell at least 1 wall unit , I'd suggest go darker brown genuine wood for every cabinet , get matching stools if you want stools , add a beanbag if you have teens or want to look fun , TV has to go near the plugs and also away from the windows and fireplace , so probably about where it is , set everything as you wish . Do you sit and talk , watch TV , have a great view out the glass , have laptops on your laps -- work it around your lifestyles .

Maybe add colourful cushions , vases , a lamp -- the world ( or your lounge ) is your oyster .

Narrow rooms are tricky. Can you provide dimensions on a sketch and if keeping furniture their dimensions too. How often do you use tv and fireplace and how many people everyday.

i would do a single armchair either side of the fireplace, remove all other furniture / items. a tv against the wall where the dark timber cabinet is, and an two seater lounge opposite, against the window beside the stairs. tv could potentially be wall mounted so it could be adjusted position wise, and then a nice table underneath with storage.
