basic idea

I think a laundry should be 'hidden' , in its own room or behind folding doors or similar . I'm actually a fan of a laundry as part of the garage , but not everyone agrees .

I'm guessing Pavillions concvept is due to prefabricating , and you can get 2 roofs orientated in different directions easier by having 2 almost seperate buildings , but I can't see the point really -- you end up with at least 20% more exterior walls , and you can't 'back-to-back' interior walls around that area , the connecting section generally has lots of glass , but the light that goes there won't directly go to the rooms you actually use , and same with any views .

You generally increase costs , it looks a bit nifty , but then you work out there's no real benefit and some drawbacks , and you wonder why ?

pavillions can be an opportunity to create better solar passive design with northern aspects for more rooms, more privacy with your rooms looking out towards courtyards instead of neighbours windows, better ventilation in hot climates and better use of a small block ...in a previous home we had three bedrooms and lounge in one section, a glass walled passageway with bathroom and laundry in the link and the rear section had family and dining areas.. a U shaped house with courtyard overlooked from hallway, lounge and family rooms

I'll build a house at least 8 stories tall ( maybe 9 , but that's another storey haha ) -- that way , almost every room can have a northerly aspect , morning light , and afternoon sun !

Not much of a second bedroom. Personally I don’t want to hear washing machine so bedroom zone if doing washing in daytime using solar.

That pic was literally the first pavilion plan found. Just a starter idea... Agree Kate about washing machine noise.

Potsy, very good points -.esp about extra walls & glass link. Laundry part of garage? Yeah I could come around to that. Laundries are more utility/mud rooms these days aren't they.

I just LOVE your 8 story single room house idea 🤣. A stacked house! but needs no neighbours to have built the same around you...

Land we are looking at has build height limit 5 m. A stacked house may present quite the design challenge!

An L shape design is my next idea. Long side with north wondows. Is it called L or Ell?

what is the length and width of the block, climate, location of north and the driveway and, is it a permanent house for how many people, do you need/want a garage and what is the maximum size house you're considering

Haven't actually secured a block yet - but smallest are 16.5 W x 22.5 L then 23 W x 30 L. If budget stretched I'd consider the 800m2+ blocks too but planning smaller for now.

For 2 people plus extra space for returning kidults. Simple needs but looks very fussy when I write it down!

Bed 1, robe room, bathroom (shower, WC, no bath req'd). Open living, kitchen, dining. Garage would be nice, double even better but one will do. Design guide has garage set back from house (?3m). Could sneak carport in front.. Height limit 5m.

Separate pavilion/annex for guests: space for 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom (shower + WC), kitchenette (bench for kettle, toaster, mini fridge) & small sofa.

Currently have East facing kitchen & backyard . West facing living & bedroom. I'd prefer to follow the sun around the day: sunrise E breakfast, N living, a sunset bevvy on the W deck 😁

Pavilions are popular in Australia because they create breezeways which are a passive cooling technique and also because we have outdoor living 9 months+ of the year in almost all states. It makes no sense to live mainly indoors when outdoor rooms are very usuable in this country. The concepts comes from the tropics where courtyards and pavilions were the main way that cooling was done prior to electricity and refrigeration. I think they are a very suitable idea in our climate. Certainly much better than the enclosed box built boundary to boundary requiring reverse cycle air conditioning to make them livable.

I'd place the laundry in a euro-laundry cupboard on one of the decks. No reason at all to have the washing machine inside in Australia. It needs to be remembered a lot of idea's about laundries being accessible to bedrooms or kitchens come from cold weather countries where the ability to dry clothes outside isn't an option much of the year so having access to things like driers from inside where it is warm is more important.

Black Bamboo, maybe the separate outside 'wash house' of my Grandparents era could make a comeback? Laundry/dog room/drinks fridge.

I live in a house where the washroom/laundry was obviously accessible from the verandah at some point. The back of the house has been extended to enclose that room in the main part of the house and honestly, I wished they hadn't. The ceiling height does not match the rest of the house, and I don't like listening to my front loader on it's spin cycle. They also squashed a shower into it, because they removed the original bathroom from the main part of the house. Lots of bad choices.
