Comments (5)You should also consider thermal efficiency and your views. Even double-glazed windows transmit heat. Your house doesn't seem to have many eaves. If you have the taller windows on your side facing walls will it mean you just get a better view of the neighbours roof and your side fence? Will they get a better view into your side facing windows? Don't just consider how it looks from the inside, but think about the whole house from the outside as well - including views, privacy, and extra heat gain in summer, and heat loss in winter, plus all of those extra window furnishings. If you are getting custom made window furnishings then there will be extra cost in materials and labour. If you are buying standard off the-shelf window coverings then there is much less range available at 2700mm heights for full length windows. Comments (6)It's about balance, between function and aesthetics. Fenestration configuration is often poorly implemented and it can be a "make or break" factor in the project outcome if you're not careful, so good to see that you're thinking about this You want to take cues from the original building style, but you can also nudge it into more contemporary territory successfully if you achieve the right balance. You can always manage/control privacy and sunlight with window furnishings. The most important things are (a) that the window proportions are balanced in the facade, and (b) they are serving the functionality of ventilation & light. On a front facade I'd never design two separate windows side by side that are slightly different, one fixed and one awning - it will look off balance. You'd be better off with two awnings, or one large window with sections of both awning and fixed, say two smaller outside awning/openable with a centralised fixed section. If you do some research in the era/style of the existing home, you'll find that the front facade windows divisions within the one window frame typically were slightly varied. Your picture has them all even that makes it look more standardised....See MoreWindow size with 2740 ceiling height
Comments (7)1800mm on a 2740 ceiling height is small. What height, off the floor level, are you starting your 1800mm windows? If you started them at 500mm from floor level, this would give you are nice high window. It would be the cost of the extra wall from floor level. weigh this cost against a 2057mm window. I have 2740mm ceilings and all my living windows are stacker doors at 2340mm. If you are having curtains, you could have your 1800 windows, and have the curtain drop from the cornice of the 2740 ceiling height. This would disguise the low window. But then this also would be an extra cost for the length of the curtain....See More3m indoor ceiling height and 2.7m outdoor ceiling height
Comments (6)Is there a particular reason you want to lower the alfresco height ? If I had to make a choice , I'd almost prefer to go for 2.7 indoors , 3 metre alfresco , because thats where you want that open feeling , the luxury of space and height , moreso in in an alfresco . As far as being noticed , the only time it wouldn't be too noticable ( IMO ) is if the alfresco floor was lower than the house level -- if you step 'outside' through a standard or sliding door , and the roof feels lower , I suspect you would notice it . That , afterall , is why you go for a 3 metre inside height , to feel open and spacious ....See More- 5 years ago
