Advice PLEASE! Design of entrance, garden and parking court.
Comments (3)gorgeous house and will be so much better with some suitable landscaping but, unless you think guests would be comfortable walking up and down the slope, i suggest that entry should be from the driveway with the extra parking area dug out of the slope at the right hand side of the driveway (as seen from the street) and have the gate house to the right of the garage with shade and screening trees and retaining walls stepped up the slope and screening shrubs between the parking area and front garden ...choice of materials and plants should have been suggested in your original landscape plans but an oval shaped lawn with formal symmetrical planting and a wide sunken lily pond in lawn feels like it would complement the house and cool the entry...See MoreEntry Feature Wall Design Help!
Comments (5)You have quite a generous hallway, so I would close in under your stairs for storage. With your idea the underside of the stairway will need to be carefully considered, detailed and built, which will add to the expense. By not worrying about how the underside of the stairs look by enclosing them will probably save you money, and give you the benefit of additional storage. Just remember that if you can draw it in 3D doesn't mean that it can be easily built in reality! Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See MoreAdvice needed on entrance design!
Comments (12)I assume it is sitting on piles/stumps ( in NZ we can them piles ) -- like bigreader , I would do the decking all along that front , even if it was narrower , and take it around the corner ( I think that is what you are heading towards on one of your options , but I'd have it more uniform , with 90 degree corners rather than different angles and widths . Then I'd have the smaller entrance door flush -- in time , you could add a small clear roof over it , or a pergola full width of the house end , or 1.5 metres square -- basically , whatever suits your needs and style . You never know , in 5 years you might want to do stone columns or leave it as it is , and again like bigreader and dreamer say , it may hardly ever get used or it may need traffic lights it gets that much traffic haha . The other option ( and I'll expand on that in a sec ) would be to make the decision that you won't use it as a door , and put a window there -- that will allow you to put furniture or even your TV in that area . You can still have the deck around there , or you may just put a step or two at the end of the 'front' main terrace , and make that the main walking way . And the thing I'm getting to in a sec -- the windows on at least 2 of the bedrooms , and the hall sort of by default , don't seem big enough -- just a gut feeling that they'll be dark on an overcast day ....See MoreHelp! - how to design/furnish this awkward entryway?!
Comments (7)Thanks for the comment. The picture cuts off the double doors to lounge which are still there. There was no window onto the porch which would be nice. You might be misreading the floorplan. I'm of two minds about this room. I don't know if you can see the sort of grey silky wallpaper. That plus the moldings make it look a bit stuffy to me. The rest of the house will be contemporary. I like the idea of a large round poof / bench. My worry is that it's going to look a bit empty and as you say it's not a place anyone will want to spend a lot of time in....See Moredreamer
