Design Dilemma Kitchens

Shall we incorporate a servery or not?

What's everyone's thoughts on having a servery with stools on the other side? Is it just a design gimmick or is it really functional? Do people actually sit there? I like the look of them but not sure if I can picture myself sitting there.

Are you talking inside or in-to-out? If in-to-out would def be used in our family.

If you mean a servery from kitchen area to outside, yes they are not a gimmick.

The cook in the kitchen will be able to prepare and just pass the food through the servery without continually walking a distance To outside.

the cook in the kitchen can talk to people outside sitting at the servery without yelling through a window.

Just recommend retractable flyscreens, if your part of the world has mosquitoes or excess flies.

But if you never entertain outside, then don't worry. Just put a window in.

Thank you all for the advice so far. It's been really helpful. I'll try answer some questions the best I can, as I don't have all the measurements etc. The structure on the northern side of the house is an old shed. Hubby wants to remove this eventually to allow access for his pool. The we were thinking about putting a single car garage in its place. Given the money restraints, we won't be looking at that for probably a couple of years. Not sure of distances from living and master bedroom to the front boundary, but yes, there would be plenty of space to build out into the front yard. We hadn't really considered that, as I thought it might look funny as the roofing will be different from the rest of the house. siriuskey, thanks so much for the diagram. It's a massive help to get my head around things. You've managed to tick off most of my wish list! I love the long pantry right behind the kitchen. I hadn't thought of structuring it that way. We figured there would be some asbestos that needs to be taken care of. I have a couple people coming by next week to take a look and get some quotes. Has anyone had experience with it and could give me a rough idea on what the costs are like? I've been told you can pay $3000 - $4000 just for them to drop it at the tip. Thanks again. I'm starting to get excited about renovating now I have some ideas from you all.

Thank you all for your comments, suggestions, drawings and photos, I really appreciate the effort you all put in to help others on this great platform. I have come up with another idea (see photos below) that involves putting the fridge on the back wall of the kitchen behind cabinetry doors (yes, I know I was adamantly against this!) and bringing the door of the pantry forward to be in line with the front of the fridge. The pantry door would also be cabinetry and the section of wall. I don’t really know how to explain this, but the wall the kitchen backs on to would be bulk headed out so it continues in line with the pantry/fridge front all the way to the ceiling. This creates a sort of symmetry in the doors of the fridge and pantry being either side of the cooktop, but without the worry of having to line the rangehood up with the apex of the cathedral ceiling....I think. What do you think? P.S. Please excuse my shoddy hand drawn sketches.

We did think of pulling up some tiles from elsewhere, but they are stuck way too well and would certainly break. Everything in this place is built to withstand a massive tornado, or maybe a bomb blast! We think the builder had shares in the company that made Sikaflex! And no, just using contrast on the threshold won't do it, sadly. I do think we'll have to cut out some good tiles to extend the feature somehow so it doesn't look odd.

You don't have to have stools. If you think no one will sit there. But a servery window with bench is beneficial if you entertain outside.

If space is tight , then no . But if you have space , do it . Inside or out .

You said it yourself -- they look good . It is a design feature . Depending on stools etc , you are talking $2k , so it won't break the budget , even if you don't use it much . But if its there , you may use it quite a bit -- try and see .

Depends on your access and layout. I have two friends with them and they don’t use them, but there layout makes it unnecessary

I lived in a house with one, never used it. I don't like sitting on stools. I prefer seating where my feet can be on the ground. Fine if you've got older kids, they sit up at the counter to eat breakfast and snacks.
