Landscape Renovation: Revitalised Rooftop in Potts Point
Our client came to us with an exciting plan - to transform their unused rooftop into a space fit for entertaining all year round. This meant we were tasked with the challenge to find ways to create a diverse, yet harmonious space that took advantage of the location and city skyline views.
As with many inner-city apartments, the indoor-outdoor lifestyle is sought after and this was no different. Before the renovation, the penthouse was completely barren and in need of some TLC. Now, the rooftop includes a new covered area fitted with an outdoor kitchen. This means there’s space for dining - of course - and it also features a free-standing fireplace and lounging area fitted with unique outdoor furniture to enjoy in winter, on rainy days or to use as shade during the peak of summer. The design is sleek with clever cabinetry designed to hide bulky appliances and cedar batten timber used for the ceiling to tie the spaces together.
The focal point of this design is the raised decking area. This space allows for the client and their guests to sit higher, taking full advantage of the city skyline views. One of the main criteria for the overall design was that the space needed to be low maintenance. To achieve this, we selected man-made materials that were as natural-looking as possible. Here, we used low-maintenance synthetic lawn which doubles to soften the area when connecting the covered space to the raised decking. The surrounding planting is also extremely low maintenance as well, complementing the composite decking and porcelain pavers.
With a few designated sections, it was imperative that they worked together in a cohesive and fluent design. To do this, we were careful about material and furniture selection to ensure there was a soft transition from space to space.
Not only is this space stunning during the day, but the lighting design is so complementary that it transforms the space at night as well. The city skyline provides a decent amount of light, so it was imperative to design lighting from the ground up as to not detract from this. The result is a unique entertaining area that shines both during the day and night and highlights the unique materials used in the project to create distinct, yet harmonious entertaining spaces.
We’d love to know what you like about this project - or if you’re planning an entertaining space of your own! Drop us a comment below.
