Help with exterior house colours please.

We bought this home and want to make the colours co-ordinate better. Roof is monument, bricks red jarrah and windows are surfmist.

We are willing to change the colour of the portico

, garage door, white weatherboard 2nd storey and front door. Portico is woodlands grey and front door black. Many thanks.

It’s not that bad. I’d paint the bricks to match the portico and cram as much greenery And landscaping as possible.

Great mixture of materials. I would suggest painting the brick a light grey, and the portico also a light grey or a white to match weather boards, and change the front entry door to a solid door with mouldings in monument gloss paint.

Hi Pele - I hope you don't mind, but to my mind the thing that immediately jumps out at me as not fitting is the colour of the orange terrace tiles! The wall colour and roof colour seem in the earth/cool ochre range, and sort of complement the cool grey driveway even though they are different. The terrace tiles being bright orange clash! If you do/don't have the budget, I would prioritise painting or staining these tiles the Basalt colour which is a deeper grey like bluestone! Or even better switch your budget to retiling this area with a deeper grey or bluestone exterior tile. Add a few plant pots - and I love your timber garage door and possibly timber balustrade - and it would be dramatically transformed! I think this would be a better impact-for-dollar than painting the roof tiles which look to me to be in good condition. Good Luck!

Oh boy oklouise, this is dangerous territory when you ask about the perfect reno! We thought we did have the perfect Reno we could afford in stages but we got just about ready to lodge with council and our architect surprised us with the costings going over by $200K and giving us a lovely flat roof and new cladding for our first stage budget. We now have about $10K less after this process and are really feeling vulnerable I suppose. So we are back to square one but the essentials are: repair the deck on the steep slope at the back, remove internal walls to open the space downstairs, reposition the staircase, new flooring, new kitchen and provide an aesthetically pleasing but functional entrance. Wish list would be garage/carport & driveway, flat roof, new bathroom upstairs, new laundry & WC downstairs and landscaping. $100K for the first stage (which probably means just deck repairs and removing walls?!) then we would be looking at refinancing and seeing what we can do next. The architect designs were beautiful but unattainable unfortunately. Anyway, I advertised our job about a week ago and I think someone is interested in meeting with us and I've also left a message for Dr Retro so I don't want you all to spend too much time on this although I really really appreciate and welcome your advice. The only part that possibly should have been accented is the verandah section. Start by giving it all and undercoat to cover the maroon. I’d paint it all a white that is right tone for your blue roof, maybe white on white and then accent the porch in a darker shade like Dulux linen white Do you know what the blue actually is?

The brick is actually the nicest facade on that house can't believe people are suggesting to paint over it. Ruin perfectly good brick. It's the big grey blob on the front which is truly offensive. Woodland grey is the wrong colour to pair with surfmist and that brick. I would paint the portico out surfmist then do whatever colour door you like.

my suggestion would be to keep the bricks and change the portico and front door to a lighter colour like Colorbond Dune and add some big potted palms to the balcony and porch

I agree with black bamboo and oklouise -- everything looks 60's , but in a clean , updated way , with 2 exceptions and a comment ! The two that are out of character is the roof ( but its livable ) and the portico . Even the gardens look 60's inspired , and I like the overall effect . Thge comment -- it needs more colour , a bit of wow !

So the very first thing I'd do is the front door in the brightest fire engine red gloss I can , it both references the brick but it adds the wow in a small way . It will take some of the focus off the portico , but probably not enough for my taste . So I'd probably do it in Surfmist or similar -- OR a 50's apricot with a bright orange door if you are brave !

But the upstairs still lacks something -- too mehhhh . The grey in the windows I am guessing are roller blinds ? I'd change them for a mid red or orange , but that may not work with the interior colours ? So maybe wooden venetians -- brings in the natural element and touch of class , and still works well with most interiors . Especially if going wooden , I'd do downstairs windows the same -- if going for coloured roller blinds maybe not .

It will look more uniform and thought out for $10-15k ( less if you do some or all yourself ) IMO .
