Curtains will add texture to the room. But I think you need to look at the room as a whole and work towards a full outcome not just adding curtains. This includes furniture, rugs, lighting, pictures etc. even an indoor plant would do wonders

It appears you are on a rural property, do you really need curtains.
You can add texture, interest and softness, with furniture, plants and artwork. A low entertainment unit under your television might be a starting point.
Sheer curtains would look good, but I suggest you spend your money on other items first.

Can you remove the bookcase from the middle of the room? It stops the room from being visually open.

Yes, we are rural so privacy is not an issue.

The room is large with lots of windows on 3 sides so there’s little wall space for shelving hence the reason for the bookshelf at the back of the couch. We do intend to cut it down height weight. Do you think this would help?

I do have some plants scattered around just none in that particular area.

I hope to add a floor lamp behind the reading chair, Covid has made it very hard to go shopping!

You have a large wall where the television is. Maybe a built in TV, with shelves either side and above. Either with doors or shelves. You have a bulk head running across the top. This could be the starting point for the built in unit. This will then take away the need for a bookshelf in the middle of your living.
