what are the rooms past the little hallway? please include plans for the rest of the house and name each room

It would be impossible to know ( apart from outside walls ) which walls are load bearing from a plan , as some will undoubtably support roof trusses , and we can make reasonable guesses , but its not exact .

By the robe , I assume that is a bedroom in the lower left corner . Even if it is a spare bedroom , visitors , office , study etc you still don't really want to go through a butlers pantry to get to it -- you may as well just have a larger kitchen that you walk through , but then that doesn't hide the sins ( walking through a butlers pantry exposes them too , of course .

IF you did a butlers pantry , you could possibly get rid of what I assume is the pantry , and make that into a short hallway into that 'mystery' room , but then you are up for removing a wall , doors may be different styles and widths , the door in from the kitchen ( existing pantry door ) is weird , so you may have to move that to enter from what I assume is the lounge . Then you have 1 door to what may be a bedroom , beside an entry door .

THEN on the other side , you still want the other hall to the bath and WC , you presumably take out the laundry wall and make all that space into a butlers pantry , do you have a door there ? Awkward if you do , messy if you don't .

And where do you put the washer and drier ?

Like oklou , I'd need way more info , not only the room names , but your lifestyle -- what is used , when and why , budget , etc . It may be that you can 'get rid' of that 'mystery' room and/or rearrange everything to suit you better , OR it may turn into a $100k exercise that just moves the deck chairs and achieves not much .

Just a quickie, take cupboard from bedroom? and make the Pantry larger, use the passageway and some or all of the linen cupboard to create a WIR to the bedroom, if size allows you could still have narrow open shelves in the laundry or WIR

I think the laundry is too far from the kitchen to use the space much. i The laundry could be used to make a robe and ensuite for the bedroom and then the pantry area expanded as suggested above. I've had a little play, forgive my pretty bodgy pict

What is the room behind that used for?
For load bearing you will need to do some investigation in the roof look at what truss supports come down the walls and where.
What feels cramped in the kitchen?

Are you prepared to move plumbing and windows? If so, demolish the laundry and move the bedroom over into that space. Then knock through the pantry into the newly vacated space creating a scullery/laundry.

How we will be using the space

Dining = Formal Sitting

Family = Dining

Bed 2 = Home Gym (can be styled as a bedroom if we sell)

Bed 3 = Home Office (can be styled as a bedroom if we sell)

Store = Bedroom/ Play Space for my twins (used to be the gym- hubs was a PT)

The home was originally finished in 2015 - it has been used as a rental but we are moving back.

Kitchen feels too small I want to gut the whole thing but keep my oven (although considering two stacked electrics for the right design) - my husband and I like to cook together and bring the girls in so in an ideal world id have more bench space.

I need more storage for appliances and would LOVE a microwave to be in a butlers or the island.

I just have no idea where to start. There is a sliding door in the laundry which I hate. Our linen is minimal, towels are kept under the bathroom sinks and spare linen is kept in the bedrooms.

I always think dream big but start small. you might want to move in first and see what you think. I like to just arrange things and use spaces as though its finished, sort of mock it up to get a feel. I went ahead and picked colours but now my thoughts have changed but I feel like i need to use what I have. i am feeling out my kitchen that way, and i'm actually glad i didn't rush to change it. i thought it was too small, but now i think it just needs better storage. the challenge i have is that the living areas literally just look onto my dishes so i love the idea of a butlers pantry. I've done a few temporary things to improve storage, i stuck a cube storage under a bench and its become a favourite storage solution, i will built a better version into my final design as its the perfect thing for appliances! toaster, mixing bowls, sandwich press, rice cooker, each fits into its own cubby. aha! finally got my picture working. though now i know how you use it all it might not be worth doing an ensuite.

had a quick stickybeak, i think it's got all the features, it just needs some cosmetic changes. looking at your ideabooks you like soft feminine pastels, but the house has a lot of 'masculine' finishes, with the grey and browns, granite and tile. i think it needs some colour and texture. to soften and warm, use greys with pink undertones, pastel toned art, soft rugs, and soft drapey sheers. i really think it needs decorating more than renovating. then if you really need it, redo the pantry area with a wider shelf at table height to accommodate appliances, and get some power points installed in there. i think a butchers block island could give you some extra bench.

some feature walls in clay, pink or nude shades would look nice too

I was thinking making laundry a little smaller by flipping the linen cupboard access to the hall and allowing it to function as robe for bed 2. Exisiting robe incorporate into your butlers pantry

the challenge with using the little hallway for a pantry is to find alternate access to bed 2 and retain access from that bedroom to the bathroom so my suggestions include removing most of the existing pantry and biw from bed 2 to make more space in the kitchen, add a pantry at one end and maybe changing access to the mpr to make a playroom for the kids under supervision from the kitchen and a reach in pantry and appliance bay at the other end and a much bigger island but i would also change access to the linen cupboard to use as linen and/or new storage for bed 2 and a new door from the garage to allow for easier access carrying groceries and kids

Removing walls for changing direction of cupboards, if brick, can certainly be done. But it is a messy, and an expensive job.

Taryn, I'm intrigued as to where you sort your whites, darks, hand wash clothing, before you wash it. As you posted, that, you only use the washer and dryer? I love my laundry, because I have the floor space to sort the dirty washing. Either into respective baskets or the floor. If it is only two people in the home, fair enough. But a laundry with floor space is great for a family. And your twins are going to get big quickly, therefore bigger clothes, take up more space. A good size laundry is a positive.

Linens come off the bed and straight into the machine when no one else is home, As do towels when the machine is empty. Darks go straight into the tub off our backs of an evening and I have a tall narrow basket for whites/lights to go into. I have a collapsible basket to take things to the clothes line and use the drier only if I need something dry urgently or the weather is poor. I have no door on this laundry nor is it possible to put one on which means, should I do things as you propose, guests would literally see all of our dirty laundry on the floor if they were to use the bathroom- which, in my opinion is unsightly and unwelcoming to our guests and stressful for me. A European laundry is far more streamlined and efficient. I’m a minimalist for the things I detest and want them done as fast as possible so I can maximise time with my family.
My mum has a system similar to yours- it’s not for my me and my family though I do understand your point and it’s a good one.

Following on from my previous Mockup, a few more suggestions. I am married to an identical twin so thought to use the Media room as a bedroom with a door connecting both beds 2 & 3 which also give them both better diect access to the family bathroom

Just read your comments, you could install your washer and dryer etc behind doors like a European laundry where it is, so you won't look into a laundry from the bathroom.

I do my washing the same way Taryn does. My laundry is a corner of the garage - if I was to sort on the floor, the washing would get run over by the car!

Taryn, no way could I have washing all over the floor, all the time. I meant on your washing days! But I see, you have that sorted.

Taryn, if you do not like the sliding doors in the laundry linen cupboard. Take the doors off, and either have open shelving, or a curtain across the shelving.

You would only ever run over it once meme, well hopefully. I 'am guessing your house was designed and planned to have the laundry in the garage. But to completely remove a laundry would be an expensive mistake.

Yes, it does. instead of knocking a whole in a gyprock wall and removing timber studs, you have to cut the brick and remove carefully. And then rebuild in brick or just replace with stud walls. if you are building a new brick wall that intersects with another, then the two brick walls need to be integrated.

Its an expensive and messy exercise, but doable.

In both cases, you will have to make sure that any load bearing walls are noted, and necessary supports/beams are installed.

You have to take into account, if brick walls are removed, then the flooring, cornices, and ceiling are also affected.

You have to weigh up your budget against the improvements.

my sister had to originally put her washer dryer at one end of the kitchen, european style. She actually found it way more convenient, and so when she got to upgrade and do over the kitchen, one end of the galley became the butlers pantry with washer and dryer in there as well. maybe it could work, but given all the advice above, I think avoiding moving walls is going to be important. Gosh, hopefully everyone's advice helps! Don't worry and take your time, I have been in my old house a year and I think i came up with 4 different floor plans before i realised what I needed to do. keep thinking it over and one day it will just hit you what needs to be done.

because siriuskey does better drawings I borrowed theirs. I don't know how that would work with brick walls, though even brick houses often have timber framed internal walls.

along with others i think it's a mistake to lose a separate laundry and have a bedroom without direct access to the family bathroom
