rust corrosion in metal stair

I started a home improvement job to paint our exterior metal stair frame. Discovered there is nasty rust corrosion in one of the support pylons.

I’ve got the gear to use rust converter, base coat and enamel rust guard.

In the section where the rust is bad I scrapped back the rust and applied rust converter but there is now a big hole in the pylon base. The pylon still feels very sturdy but lm not sure what to do to seal and protect it? Or is more drastic action required?

Help will be very appreciated.

( I could have ignored your advice request, however)

I am requesting you to barricade the top and bottom of the steps stop using them IMMEDIATELY, also barricade under the steps to prevent any access under and.,

And

Organize for a professional safety inspection, TOMORROW.

SAFETY

The problem is that there could be other places rusted, and severe structural problems,

I don.t want to alarm you unnecessarily,y advice may be over the top, and not required however when it comes to safety, there are no second chances

Using timber as much as possible for construction rather than metal. Fibro cement and masonry are good choices as well. Be careful of basic things like fasteners such as screws, nails, nuts and washers. These need to be considered as well surprisingly enough. Even quality stainless on hand railings for example has corrosion issues but generally from staining only. Stainless inside a house close to a surf beach can have corrosion and staining issues too. Aluminium is good but can cop it hard too. Timber windows would be a better choice but they still require maintenance too. Copper is great but expensive. It does however last virtually forever. Gutters and downpipes in copper are available for example as is roofing and wall cladding. Almost nothing beats it.... just a budget killer..... There is no advantage in buying cheap construction materials and then replacing it with more cheap. Do it once and do it right. It will add more to the homes value and save you money over the long term. Short term pain long term gain. TV's are a disposable item as are most electronics and electrical's unfortunately. As its a holiday home you could always buy new for your existing house and use the 'second hand' at your holiday house.

colorbond will always scratch if not carefully handled - that's why the flat/flashing sections come supplied with plastic protection......colorbond colours are essentially just a quality/proprietary paint application to the zincalume material......the risk is actually more the other way around in regards to corrosion, say if you mix & match steel/gal gutters that have run off from zincalume sheeting, or lower sections of older gal roofing catching run off from zincalume gutters above - that's when you get accelerated rust-out situation..... If you have had everything replaced with the same material, scratches or intact, you should be OK........ BTW any roofing will buckle when walked on - the roofers should know to only walk over where it's supported structurally....possibly the older heavier gear would hold better, because back then they made it thick so it lasted for longer......but then new technology with zincalume enabled thinner and more durable material that was easier to throw around, but equally requires more careful handling when fitting

Thanks for your feedback. I like the strand wires balustrade, still undecided between timber posts/handrail or aluminum or steel. It seems Bunnings doesn't have much variety of them either.

Agree with Beach bathroom. This is at the base of your stairs, so any weight on the stairs is going to be loaded at that point.
Do not use the stairs until you have had them professionally looked at.

Any type of paint will not help at all. The stairs are structurally unsound!

Structural Engineer.....Local Council, if not able to help you may be able to suggest an engineer.

My thoughts

Darwin. wet, high humidity, steel has rusted from the inside, thickness possibly greatly reduced in thickness and strength.

Thanks very much again. Also wondering what kind of tradees do this kind of work ? Will make inquires about a structural engineer but suspect may be hard to find and what kind of person would carry out repairs?

Darwin is a city with lots of new developments. Contact a builder, any builder, and they will put you in touch with the necessary professional. They might even do the job for you.
