Red hardwood floors - what to do
We're currently planning a renovation of our timber cottage and are trying to decide what to do about the floors. We currently have polished hardwood floors that many people seem to appreciate but we find they look a bit dated and have a red hue that won't go with the more modern finishes we are wanting with the renovation.
So, my question is, do we :
A - Spend the money on redoing the floors with something like a nice oak engineered timber (something like this https://www.havwoods.com/au/products/hw2158/)
B - sand them and see if a new stain improves the aesthetic
C - just suck it up and save the $$

Comments (14)I like the contrast of the dark floor with the light color cabinets. There are things to consider before doing a dark floor 1. You will have I clean it more often because dirt will show up more 2. Scratches and dents are more prevalent. If you like dark floor but are worried about stuff showing up, my suggestion would be to use a penetrating oil like Rubio Monocoat. Comments (10)From the point of view of how we manage our time, which is unrelentingly finite, I don't find oil a practical seal for the traffic and spills of the kitchen area, unless you enjoy constantly tending something, cleaning and re-oiling regularly. Timber floor finishes have changed a lot in recent years. Polyurethane gives timber a distinctly tan/orange colour. Water based seals are a bit more expensive but far more durable in low sheen than polyurethane, and doesn't add that orange tint. If you wet a piece of your timber you will see a similar effect to water-based seal - it intensifies the marks, grains, tones and colour differences somewhat - just like wetting a dry rock or shell intensifies the marks and colours briefly. You can experiment on a piece of your flooring first before making a decision. Comments (46)I have two dogs and they both live and play inside. At one stage we had three. Our floors look no more worn than the day I oiled then 6 years ago. We will be selling in around a year and at that time I may rotary with a white pad (never need to sand again)but really there is no need. After 30 years of fixing timber issues, it breaks my heart to see such a beautiful substance treated with a toxic plastic bag. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoHello Louise yes I think this mix will look good. I would suggest limiting the proportion of Lighter timber though, and using a greater proportion of white (like in some of the images above and here below). I would also recommend that you don't stain (colour) your floors but just polish (clear lacquer) them.
Before sanding and polishing you could also fill the small gaps and cracks between the boards with Calking and then sand this calking back (when dry) along with the timber to give a more flush uniform, modern finish to your floor.
