Cathedral Ceiling Reno
Comments (45)Having been brought up in a Lockwood home I love cathedral ceilings but I do understand your concern in relation to heating & insulation. My parents had to replace their iron roof after it had passed its use by date. Depending on the state of your roof you could consider adding a roof over the top of your existing roof & adding insulation in between the old & new roof cavity. We also did paint the ceilings white in the bedrooms to add a bit of lightness to the room - but it added no heat. If you have high ceilings you are so lucky. It would in my mind a pity to paint them out in your main living areas. Have you considered doubling up your floor space by adding a mezzanine floor above some sections of the home? This will still give the gabled ceilings but also you to insulate the new floor cavity & any heater / heat generated under the sub floor wouldn't automatically go any high which would make parts of the home easier to heat. I hope you can visualise What I am suggesting. The view from the upper floor will also add a new dimension to the house....See MoreWhat should I replace my dining chairs with?
Comments (12)It all depends on how much money you would like to spend. As your lounge is dark and your stools and bookcase are also dark I think white chairs would be fine, but then I would change the stools as well and take some white down to the lounge area. However you can buy stretchy covers for this style of chair for around $10 and there is quite a variety, so I would look on line for those to see if you like any of them as that would be a very easy fix....See MoreWhat colour should I update the outside of my home to?

Comments (8)Conventional rafters to a cathedral ceiling are always substantially more expensive due to the skilled labour content needed, especailly if there is a large span, and you have large, heavy rafters that need to be hoisted up. If the rafters are exposed then it is even more expensive as you want a visual grade that isn't too knotty or has visual imperfections. A scissor truss roof looks visually busy if exposed, but is a lot cheaper and easier to install. They are also great at attracting dust and spiderwebs, and need more consideration for careful lighting design between the exposed trusses. The cleanest and easiest answer is a scissor truss roof with the ceiling lining attached to the underside of the truss, which gives you a decent ceiling cavity for insulation and wiring, and still a cathedral ceiling look. So much to consider with aesthetics, practicality, insulation, time and cost when weighing up these options. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See MoreLeigh James
