Hey Yes the bottom pic from capris on is spot on! I think timber slat with a surround on every panel is much nicer than screwed into posts.And definitely oiled or stained,nice "house" but a bit warmer would be more "home"...

Lovely house! We have a 1940s clinker brick home too, whilst the inside has some amazing art deco style features, our exterior is nowhere near as lovely as yours! We have a similar brick fence (with a rail along between small pillars), I don't love it but also many of the fences in our area of that vintage have toppled over, been replaced or are a bit wobbly (as ours is). I've also been tossing up on fence options and am keen on a picket & top rail fence, virtually the same as the white fence (domain-pinterest) photo you've posted above. You could paint it in your dark colour and even ask the fencing company to add a diamond motif occasionally to echo your home's motif. We'd go for 1.5m, but our council allows higher (up to 2m) on busy roads which yours may be. In any case, I'd 2nd the idea of growing a hedge behind the fence to limit noise and minimise privacy and visual softness. We've had amazing success with Viburnum Dense Fence. It's a breed of sweet viburnum that is particularly dense and fast growing, evergreen of course and ours has doubled in size in only 9 months. We had our local nursery order it in and planted approx 90cm apart. The foliage is lovely, not too dark, not too formal etc. ould be something to consider then you could have a lower fence and have the hedge grow higher as you wish.

I would not touch your fence for at least 12 months. At the moment it is giving you a quiet and private garden "room" which leads off your charming front verandah. Why don't you see how much you use this outside space during the different seasons before you make a decision? At the moment I would be comfortable enough to sit on your front verandah in my PJ's and dressing gown having a morning wake up coffee and enjoying the morning sun. I would never do that if the neighbourhood could see me. Never rush into making any changes to a new home until you understand the home and how it performs through the different seasons. Big Reader, Julie and Davinci, many thanks to you all. Yes, I’m really happy with all your suggestions, and they have cemented what my initial thoughts were. I thought the cream would be too bland. Agreed that the stronger colour will make the fence pop. And yes, I’ve been looking at letterboxes and will go with a good looking one in chrome, which will tie in the house roof.
