Need help with Kitchen, Dining, and Family room layout plan
We've recently purchased a house and are looking to renovate. It's a 60's weatherboard house (wood frame on brick piers) that has had an extension that has added the Master Bedroom + En-suite, Family Room, and Laundry + Toilet to the rear of the house. The rear of the house faces West.
The plan is a fairly major renovation including updates to both bathrooms and the original kitchen. However, we are mainly struggling to work out how to arrange the kitchen, dining and family rooms together. We want to remove the wall between the existing Dining and Kitchen and open it up to the Family Room, but we feel like the existing Kitchen and Dining space (comb. 5.7m W x 3.9m D) isn't wide enough to allow for both with enough room for general access to the Family room space.
One idea we had, pictured below, was to move the Dining space completely, placing it in the front Lounge, connected to the Kitchen via either framed walkway or bi-fold doors. This gives us a nice sized kitchen, but our worry with this arrangement is the dining space becoming too disconnected from the Kitchen and also crowding the area by the Front Entry.
We would really appreciate any thoughts and ideas about how we might be able to arrange these spaces.

5 years agoI’d close of right hand entry to lounge and add doors or slider to other portal for sound control between two living areas. Kitchen add a pantry on rh wall

Comments (3)Hello Dee, I would 'mirror image' your plan and have the kitchen against the original part of the house (to the left of your step down) and still with the island. Comments (4)Hi Charles, Firstly, I am not a designer or anything but I have just spent over 12 months planning & designing my house so I've looked at heaps of plans & I've done lots of research. This is what I have come up with.. I think you can leave it with the same layout and just extend the wall off the rumpus. Yes it eats in to you bi-fold doors but I have a plan to counteract that & not sacrifice the light & open plan. Using corner stacker doors (much cheaper than bi-fold) will open this space right up to the alfresco area. Not sure what you had planned for this area but if you were planning on having a built in bbq area it could be done on the back of the rumpus room wall (in the space where I extended the wall). I also think you will have more flexibility if you have doors entering the rumpus rather than sliding doors as you can use the wall space without having to worry about the wall cavity. I printed your plan off & had a play so check it out & see what you think. I will not be offended however if you don't like my ideas as its your house & it needs to suit you & your family. Comments (7)To be blunt -- the room isn't really big enough ! So you have to sort out priorities , and space . You have a dining table , and a computer desk . Can you get rid of the computer desk , by having your computer tower mounted behind the couch or similar , and a wireless keyboard and mouse that you can use on the dining table ? Mount the monitor on a wall , or if you don't need in depth graphics , I understand you can use your TV ( I've heard something about the 'refresh rate' is less on a TV ? ) . Maybe even have a monitor but also the option of using your TV ? Could you use a 'breakfast bar' , probably where the computer desk is now , I know its not sociable all staring at a wall , but it would/could serve as a brakfast bar and computer workstation . Could you get rid of the dining table and chairs , and have a large coffee table , or 2 smaller ones , and eat 'casually' ( my polite way of saying eat sitting on the couch ) ? Even mounting the TV on the wall will let you get rid of the cabinet , but I gather you have gaming consoles in there ? And the present arrangement with the pot plants uses some space -- maybe some shelves with them on will still retain the plants but free up floor space ? Comments (11)Ps. My island in my current small kitchen is on lockable castors. It was made by the cabinet maker at the same time as the kitchen. On three sides the panels go to the floor and you can’t tell it moves. The front with drawers has no kick board so you have access to the castors. I don’t move it a lot but it was handy when the kids were little - I moved it totally out of the kitchen and put in a small table. Occasionally I move it over a bit if both kids are cooking at once....See More
5 years agolast modified: 5 years agofirst thing i would do is rearrange the furniture to see how you could use the family and living rooms.. there are too many doorway in odd locations and what is the purpose of the alcove in the family room?? based on available information my suggestions include different doorways and options for extending tables for dining and a new arrangement for ens and bathroom
