Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Narrow bathroom dilemma

I have a narrow 1.29 - 2.75m bathroom and would love a bath, open shower, vanity and toilet. Do you think this is doable? Should I sacrifice the bath? I am planning to have kids soon. I could extend the room by a metre but will need DA approval and this could really blow things out. Has anyone done similar? Help!

Where is the door to access this room. Can you do a sketch of the space, showing door and any windows.

is this an existing house or proposed extension...please post plans of the house showing all adjoining rooms with dimensions

I think the first mood board is more visually appealing and will make more of a statement. As for the black, they look great but i would aim at not making the room to busy, and just selecting 2 different styles of tile at the most. If you have renovated other rooms of the house or are trying to keep a theme through out - think about this also. Also i believe it would be more worthwhile for your home if you keep the two bathrooms similar, with minor changes like the size of the bathroom tiles - this wont be a big deal, as long as they are similar. Would love to know how you went and what you decided upon!

What are the dimensions of the existing room without walls, where are the windows, in the toilet and over the vanity in the shower room? 3M x 3M what are we working with. If you remove all the walls except the linen cupboard and does the linen cupboard also have hall access? If so get the linen opening out of the bathroom and have doors to hall side, which will make both elements work better. I know toilets in main bathrooms are not everyone's cup of tea, but if you can have a 720 door from i take it, a hall, run a custom made vanity unit, and it must be custom made to fit exactly the space available, and take it from hall and over the toilet cistern, which should be a concealed cistern, maintenance panel is the flush plate, and just pan is displayed. Two vanities if needed, one bigger one is more on trend, and hang the cabinets off the floor under the vanity top, to make it look longer and makes cleaning under the cabinet so much easier. That leaves a lot of space for the bath where the second vanity unit is now, which would look fantastic as a freestanding type. A simple frameless glass or semi frameless glass shower screens, allow access to bath, so it might be say 1M wide, if you install those long grid type floor wastes and the shower is long enough you might get away without a shower door. New taps nice big tiles to ceiling and this will look sweet. Close off the toilet and it becomes a bit of a rabbit warren. R

Hi Pummers, no architect worth that title would ever just provide a default plan. The architect's JOB is to discuss your needs and wants with you and work that into the design, often through a number of revisions until you are satisfied. If he/she doesn't do that, speak up about them not giving you proper architectural service. I know about the problem of space for towel rails in a small bathroom. What I have done in such situations is to fit 2 towel rails on the back of the bathroom door, one at 900 and one at 1800 height. That usually works very well.

my suggestion for the master suite depends on location of the windows but removing the biw and changing the location of the master bedroom entry door would allow enough space for an ens and wiw with 4.2m of full height storage plus space for a tall chest of drawers and plenty of standing/dressing area and the ens would allow for double vanity and 1200 x 900 shower depending on the exact width and location of the big window but i've included an alternative with a small desk/dressing table/chest of drawers in the bedroom if the big window is too wide or can't be changed BUT always depends on accurate dimensions and your measurements of the other bedrooms and family bathroom are inconsistent so could you please confirm the size of all the rooms, including the entry, hall, wardrobe and pantry..and what is the height of the downstairs ceiling as there may be a small amount of storage space that could be located above the stairs (behind the present location of the fridge??)

Not doable with these current dimensions if you want to have a full-size bath, full-size open shower, full-size vanity with some bench space, and room to use it comfortably without grazing your shins every time you use it. Kids need more space with potty training and using a bath, so even if you could get everything you want in your narrow room, you won't have the room to supervise children.

If you extended the room to 2.29 x 2.75 you would have a better chance. I would consider using a shower with a sliding shower door (uses less space than an open shower), a 1500mm long bath, and a semi-recessed basin.

Small bathrooms are the hardest to design and get right as you need to allow space for doors to open and to move around and be able to use the space.

Thanks folks! We just bought an old cottage that has a crappy 1950s extension out the back. The plan would be to go out and make it longer — 1.29 x 3.7. We will make the door a sliding one either way.

You could extend the laundry under roof line and move toilet into it making space for shower,

Thanks Kate. We plan on knocking down the laundry/kitchen wall and opening that up so we can have galley style with a double door at the back.

I have a shower over the bath due to a small bathroom. It works great with kids.

Opening up between the kitchen and laundry as you had planned you could possibly look at something like this, I have added two full height windows in the living/family room to allow for more light and ventilation this will also make the rooms feel larger,

The furniture layout can be changed, ie: lounge with TV and dining table

Our first house was a single fronted Federation in Sydney, it only had one bedroom with a side entrance tino an entry vestble, from this the master bedroom went off to the left , the living right, the bathroom was next to that which made up the total width of the house a narrow galley kitchen behind that which opened to a square verandah, This verandah was filled to make a bedroom for our two kids

It was small but worked really well for that period with our young family. The kitchen was narrow with everything running along the external wall, there was just enough space to have narrow pine sideboard on the the other wall for crockery, cutlery storage
