How do you heat up in winter in Vic when we get very little sun and the weather has turned Artic this year, Main reason I am noticing the cold, especially when working outside. I do have low blood pressure so feel the cold, but the red clothing next to skin works a charm. I would like to understand... I have seen on uTube where they DIY passive heat I liked the pictures but no explanation and these were using exisiting windows .. I this with gap at bottom on outside so cold air comes in and gap at top on inside so warm air into house.... but got to technical for me. And I get confused, as hot air rises and I dont understand why fans are at the top in newer models not at bottom [of heaters] But I would mind understanding how it works.. Am going to check the website, TU very much. I have bats to put in kitchen reno but would like something to attach to the corrogated iron so there is no gap between iron and bats. Appreciate your help and will check again on your site to see if I missed anything :)

Hi samkosky. We had two of these very efficient heaters until a friend, who works as a specialist 'tester' for Energy Safe Victoria, visited and inspected them. (We had no idea but these old heaters have been deadly, sadly.) Your Plumber and Gasfitter should be able to test them for safety, I believe and will also know the models that should be dismantled. Yours may be safe, but you do need to check. We had to get the plasterer in after we got them removed, of course. (We replaced them with split systems, up high, so no issues with furniture placement or efficiency. Not cheap but really work well and look good - and are safe.) Good luck with yours.

Same brand as the one you have only a lot older obviously. Never left dark soot marks on the walls...that's not good. It should be vented. I remember as a kid being able to operate it- it was fan forced, vented and heated the entire house. Perhaps needs a service/filters cleaned ?...Service it if you plan to keep it, who knows the last time anyone did this??. We've never run our ducted systems in Winter, too $$$. I've always looked for alternate heat sources to keep bills down, that's why I suggested to get a price for an oil delivery. If oil is astronomically $$$, probably get rid of it, use your ducted. I remember we would get our oil delivery at the start of Winter, sometimes a 2nd one at the end if it had been a particularly cold Winter. Hope this helps.

In NSW for example electric storage can no longer be used. Heat Pump HWS are quite efficient. Gas instantaneous HWS are probably the most popular if natural gas is available. Very efficient as they only run when a hot water tap is turned on as well as being quite cheap to buy and install. The choices all depend of what you're ultimately requiring and whats available. Natural gas available, wanting to be environmentally friendly, solar power to run a HWS, etc.. Solar HWS... Lot of choices depends on your circumstances and budget.
