I like bedrooms and bathrooms being off a hall for privacy and noise control.

removing any of those walls doesn't make the rooms bigger it only makes furniture arrangement more difficult although with correct dimensions of all the rooms there may be some ideas to open up between kitchen and living area and rearrange the entry hall

With dimensions in metres, give or take a few cms

@oklouise - I didn't think about furniture, but your right it would be harder to place things around the room!

I don't want to open it up for the sake of opening it up for more "floor space" if it's actually useless space or make things harder!

Renovation plans can quickly become more expensive than a new home. So start with that coat and keep it in mind

I’d suggest you consider it from a functionality perspective. What lifestyle functions are you trying to improve? Then weigh up the improvements against costs and any repercussions ie noise to the bedrooms. That will help you focus your design.

I have lived in houses like this that have had walls removed.....yes it's not new, they used to do this back in the day. Personally I wouldn't recommend it as it creates noise issues and loss of privacy for bedrooms.

Yes be wary of removing too many walls. Someone did that to our house, and it really messed up the flow and its so hard to put walls back! In our house its meant everything orients so you can literally see our dishes from every visible turn, but no views or anything. I now have a lounge room with a only one solid wall, there are 4 doorways one is a double french door and there are 2 more than 2m span openings. it has wasted a lot of space and means there is no where sensible to put a sofa, it just floats in the middle of the room. I hate it. it has turned the lounge room into central station. they also moved the bathroom to the back of the house and so yeah, you have to cross the lounge to get to it. and lost a whole other area at the back that connects the toilet, bathroom and back door. I wish they had just removed one wall and moved the loo. Honestly, keep the walls. open up to the kitchen if you have to, but if you notice how everyone is installing butlers pantries to hide everything? I think the trend is going back towards separate kitchens, but I am no expert. your laundry room is large and could be used for pantry space?

Once you've been there a while you'll know which wall you want to punch out! kapow!

I would only remove the red wall. Nothing else. Walls can be important things for...keeping the roof up, or as mentioned, separation from bedrooms and bathrooms, privacy and furniture placement.

My biggest worry is that you are planning a renovation , and don't seem to know the difference between pink and purple haha . . . . . . . . . I'm wondering what your new colourscheme will look like ?

Remove the red wall and leave the others for separation and privacy for the other rooms so that they do not open from the living room .

the place is a shoebox. I'd doz it and start again.
remove the red wall. push the yellow wall into the living room and make the hall your feature

as already said removing walls usually means new floors and ceilings and not worth doing unless all the spaces are improved and adding furniture usually helps identify what walls should stay...eg by removing the wall between kitchen and living areas there's now space for a corner island but no where for the fridge and the wide sliding glass external door in the kitchen makes locating cabinets or fridge on the laundry side of the kitchen more difficult

but removing the wall between laundry and kitchen could make more space for a better kitchen but that means finding an alternative laundry. ...but, what are your long term plans for the house and is there enough space for an extension?

If you remove the green wall, then your living area becomes part of your bathroom and laundry. Not a good idea.

Thanks everyone for your replies! It's really does get the brain thinking about things I haven't even considered yet.

It is a small home, but there's only me & my other half so it's perfect for us. We have our bedroom then 1 office/cave space each. If a kid come into the picture then we'll combine the office space (or he'll loose his 😂), but baby plans aren't on the radar for anytime soon! And you're right we haven't move in yet, be calling it home in next 4-12mths.

The floors are currently carpet throughout most of the home so well be ripping them up - if it's timber underneath then yay (hopefully condition is good we'll get someone to sand/restain) pretty sure it's timber because the kitchen floors & hallway has timber. If not then we'll redo the floors & take the opportunity to move the walls too.

Long term...like 10+ years we'd either rebuild or extend up. Feels like a rebuild would be better value but thats still ages away

As it's a small house, you could think of not having a separate laundry but adding that space to the kitchen and putting washer/dryer/tub behind cupboard/folding doors. This might make your kitchen arrangement easier.

@Kath, I really love the idea of a cupboard style laundry! I've seen some say it's not enough when family starts to grow - kids arent on the radar yet. So this'll work for us.

Will need to think about it a little more, if i slim down the laundry and add folding/sliding doors facing the kitchen then I won't be able to put storage on that side...but if I do the doors on the bathroom side then that might workout. Although not sure how I feel about a bathroom+laundry combo.

Also the laundry currently has a door to the backyard, I really don't want to touch the exterior walls. Probably leave the external door as a permanently closed door instead. 🤔

Or I do the crazy thing and completely move the laundry to the garage. this isn't ideal but great for space! Lol (garage already has a small shower & toilet already - I think the last owners abandoned a granny flat conversion project

if your garage already has a spare shower and toilet, its a great spot for a laundry! It will save kitchen space. as for future family the main problem is the sheer amount you end up with. you need space for laundry hampers at least 1 per person, and a lot more for a baby. THEN, you need somewhere to fold and sort it. ie not in the middle of your loungeroom or bedroom. so a little laundry corner in the garage with a long bench for folding, space for hampers under and an above bench cupboard for storing washing powders, pegs etc... it will need a door direct to the line to be convenient.

the meantime if you don't need all the space that long bench and cupboard could be used for tool storage

moving the laundry to garage means a larger kitchen which is a worthwhile upgrade. it'll be easier to afford and do now than when a family is suddenly on the cards. future proof yourself. it'll make it a family house if you decide to sell or move.
