Comments (37)Hi iggs85 as it is an older kitchen I would not spend a huge amount of money on a revamp. It is definitely possible to paint laminate but good preparation is vital to ensure the paint 'sticks'. However a quality painter is going to charge you about the same as your resurfacing quote. Using either a painter or a resurfacing company does let you choose any colour though. The biggest disadvantage of the current benchtop is the bullnose which is very dated. From your photo, the colour and pattern look OK but you could get a stone 'overlay' put on it. They square off the bullnose so it looks more contemporary. An acrylic feature panel on the return is another alternative to vinyl planks. It looks like glass, comes in a good range of colours and is relatively inexpensive compared to glass. See http://zenolite.com/range as an example. You can buy acrylic sheets from Bunnings. You could also use pressed metal panels as a feature eg. http://www.wunderlite.com.au/catalogue/details/1/79/pressed-metal-crystal?start=25 Add some new handles on doors and drawers too....See MoreKitchen headache — advice?
Comments (40)I am not sure about the idea that your kitchen needs to look like it is in a display home at all times with nothing to indicate that you use it regularly. I love cooking and still manage to put used dishes straight into the dishwasher and keep the benches relatively clear. Any open plan kitchen layout will have the same issue ie you will still see dishes on the sink no matter where you place it in the kitchen. Stay focussed on the function, walking from one side of the kitchen between the sink and cooktop is not efficient nor safe. Next time you are preparing a meal imagine you are doing it in your new kitchen layout as this will test whether it functions properly for you. Definitely keep your larder/pantry you won't regret it. More than 3-4 stools at the island can be over rated, most people prefer to sit around a table as a family rather than line up at the bench looking at the sink and stove. It sounds like you have always been on the right track, just try not to over think it....See MoreAdvice on kitchen upgrade
Comments (18)If you like the coloured cupboards I would leave them, but I would paint the top cuboards in the blue of your lounge. Be daring. The timber floor will make a huge difference, but I would keep the appliances white as you need white to counteract all those colours. I wouldn't mess around with altering the colours you have now as that will change the whole effect. Try painting a piece of art paper in the colour for the top cupboards and stick it on to see if you like it. Changing the benchtops to Caesarstone or something like that is a good idea and leave the timber island until it needs changing. If you are planning to replace the stove, I think you will have space to get your microwave off the bench. Good luck and don't forget to show us the finished product....See MoreSplashbacks for an upgrade of an older kitchen
Comments (14)Why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone ? The kitchen is , and proposed to be , boring ; plus you need a splashback ; and you can't decide the height . I'd even add to that -- the only 2 'interesting' things there now is the wooden blinds , and the floor , and unfortunately I don't think the blinds go with the grey . So here's what I'd do -- a tiled splashback , probably 150 x 150 square white , up to the height of the upper cupboards , but then a row of horizontal subway tiles along the top of everywhere except the larger 'cupboard' wall -- and I'd do them in your favourite colour . A powder blue , a burgundy , an apricot , shamrock green , bright orange , well maybe not brown or grey . Adds some colour , 'lifts' the room in 2 respects , but also adds some relevance to the blinds ....See More- 3 years ago
