Struggling to think of suitable plants for new garden

I have just bought a terrace how in a new estate on the Sunshine Coast, QLD and have a small space for the garden. The plants have been hammered by the recent rains and grasshoppers and some small black ants.
I am wondering what can I do to replace them? Does anyone have any suggestions on some low maintenance plants as we are sometimes away for work. We have synthetic turf at the back but thinking of putting it at the front also.
I was thinking of keeping the big plants/trees and then replacing the under neath areas with something more simple.
The back (where the the synthetic grass is) gets the morning east sun, and the front gets the hotter western afternoon sun.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I am very new to gardening as I have always lived in apartments.
