If having a cooktop on your island, then ideally a 1200mm wide bench is best. This if for safety and splash of food. This would be your starting point. Then if you add in a double sink and drainer then ideally your island needs to be at least 3500mm in length.
Hi Craig, there are dimension rules regarding the minimum distance between a power outlet and sink bowl and there are dimension rules regarding the minimum distance between a gas cooktop's trivet and any combustible vertical surface, however I am not aware of any dimension rules regarding the distance between a sink and Gas Cooktop.
There are also no rules regarding placement of a sink and gas cooktop on an island however when doing so, always consider how you are going to use these and how much bench space you will need around each of these for you to work with these two elements efficiently.
@dreamer Really! we use also metric here. figures I've shown above are feet-inches. Unit of measurement used in the U.S. Normally the rules of thumbs for the kitchen sink to are consider dishwasher, trash bin and base cabinet below the sink. from center of the sink you need at least 500mm from the edge of kitchen sink.
