Comments (5)Your aspect and site preparation plus soil quality will have a big bearing on your garden success along with good planning & advice from garden experts. There are quite a few stories on subtropical gardens & this one is about [Balinese style gardens[(https://www.houzz.com.au/magazine/so-your-garden-style-is-balinese-stsetivw-vs~28063813). If you read it there will be links to other similar stories that you can save and find the right plants and a design to suit your space. If you stagger the deck or paved surface the space has more interest and pockets to plant feature/colourful plants. Agree with Sian about finding the water feature first to start with & maybe a watering system to keep it all lush. Do you have any mature neighbouring gardens to borrow backdrop, shade and height for your space? Plan it out first and Good Luck!...See MoreSmall garden design ideas needed please
Comments (33)Strong geometry, cool blue and glass and a plain lawn background. to fill the diamond with bush is going to cancel out its strength. But something different to the slightly sterile design compilation … if the finance is there, get two or three massive raw rock slabs and one spectacular architectural tree. resist going vertical .. layer them horizontally to slightly overlap or break the hard lines of the diamond, but not to obscure it. Then choose you vertical with a sculptural tree. There are vertical cherry trees with spectacular autumn colour which would contrast with the rocks (texturally), and be floaty like the water in the pool…. whatever the tree, lift the foliage up from the soil level, and underplant with jut one kind of tight low ground cover, even moss (if your climate can support) or ground hugging juniper that you can train inside the diamond. This combination of elements is rich for the eye, softens the geometry, and adds interest which is lacking right now. The place for shrubs and grasses and palms is to border the lawn....See Moresmall home design ideas needed
Comments (6)do you know where you want to buy land as you'll first need to check what's acceptable to local council...having recently completed our own small owner builder livable shed i have to say it's not as cheap as you may think...eg insurance during buiding is double the cost of insurance for the finished building and you have to have all the regular features required for any size house including a functioning kitchen, bathroom and laundry and, although our small steel shed house is only 49sqm, the work that can easily be done by an amateur doesn't save that much when work takes so much longer and you don't have the necessary skills and equipment and there's no saving for electrical, plumbing, sewerage, BASIX, engineering, council, earthworks, concrete slabs, windows etc etc and it's not legal to live in the house until it's finished to a standard acceptable for an occupation certificate and that excludes living in the house while you do most of the work and, while owner builder can be worthwhile for those with spare time...we didn't have to earn a living, satisfy bank regulation and/or pay rent while we tried to do all the work ourselves and, unless you have all the necessary money for the whole project it may be difficult to get a loan to finance something that is not a standard house so check with your bank and be honest to make sure that you have a clear understanding of available funds... we've built and renovated numerous properties and have regular reliable trades people to do the skilled work, our own equipment, money and time and our little house still cost more per square metre than a suburban brick veneer so small does not equal cheap ... first check with councils and financers to be sure of the best options.....having said all that we're very happy with our little shed house and happy to encourage something similar!!...See MoreDesign ideas needed for Kitchen & Living combined - small space
