Thanks Janine and Luke. Our home is not country by any means. It is a new build. The dining room is part of an open space that joins our stairs, living and kitchen. We are going for a "scandinavian look" if that is even the word for it! haha. A lot of timber, timber floors and furniture, clean whites and greys. Lots of timber stacker doors, glass pendant lights, glass handrails on open timber stairs, all white kitchen with one long large window, a single timber shelf rather than upper cupboards and oversized glazed white subway tile splash back. It's hard to explain….do you think this sort of table would work in that sort of space?

Is your final photo of the vanity you already have? I also thought adding legs would take it back to the MCM you are after. Would be interesting to know how the silver drawer pull is attached. Not sure about painting it matte black as I thought timber furnishings were more prevalent then, but it's totally your choice. I hope you will post updates as you go. I just love mid-century.

I am just wondering whether it is a good thing or not to go with solid colours like the dark blue (prussian blue), grey floors and white on other walls all in tiles. I see that a lot of designers seem to do a pattern on one wall, but I haven't found one suitable and whatever I do, I just don't want it to look out of date in 5 years time. I am not sure how about much of the prussian blue tile is appropriate in order for it to be noticeable but not too overpowering.

Academy Tiles are always my first point of call for tiles that are not stocked by the generic tile retailers. The domed finish you speak of is by the build-up of glaze on a flat circular porcelain tile. The glaze towards the edge of the tile is thinner than the glaze towards the middle which gives a subtle "domed" appearance. Although I wouldn't be using penny round tiles in a 1969 retro house if I was trying to be authentic as they are too contemporary.
