How prepare bathroom floor for waterproofing?

Hi All,

I'm planning to do a bathroom reno and would like to do as much DIY as possible. I will get a licensed waterproofer, but I'd have to prepare the floor for them. As I understand, I'd have to

get rid of old tiles
remove whatever is under the tiles to reach the cement floor
level the floor if necessary

Anything else?

Also, there's tile skirting, and I guess it's fixed/glued to plasterboard(?), so if I damage it too much while removing skirting tiles, do I need to do something about it, like re-plaster?

how old is the house as you may need to check for asbestos on walls and floor and is teh whole house a slab on ground if not the floor under the tiles may not be concrete..., when replacing floor tiles i would also replace skirts to ensure waterproofing is above the floor all around (and avoid a potential leak at the join) and depending on what you are planning to do (ëg install new shower stall or wet floor?) i would also consult your tiler about "levelling the floor" which is much more complicated than we think.. and take your time removing the old tiles, especially on the walls as it's better to do as little damage (to the structure and yourself) as possible and you will find many online DIY instructions for retiling that are worth reading before you start...good luck with your project

Attach are photos. I have been told by 3 different bathroom / plumbing co's it is not mould. They have scraped out some grout, put new grout in & the dark stain has come through again. The builders warranty expired Nov 2015. The builder passed away about a year ago but his wife is still alive & she was co-builder / co-vendor. But, as I'm out of warranty not sure if I have a leg to stand on. It has been suggested that the experts scrape out all the grout, silicon the bit where the stains are & re-grout & maybe the rusty nail stain doesn't break through the silicon / new grout. Can the wrong nails be used in wet rooms that has therefore rusted? Is there normally special nails for wet rooms? Has anyone heard of a 10 year builders warranty - standards & tolerances - for major defects; possibly like this? Thank You. It's very annoying I must say.

Hi Suneiah I had new doors, side panels and shelves made for the existing vanities. Fortunately the new doors and panels have not subsequently been affected by moisture. I also changed the tapware to something a little sleeker and ergonomically better, and painted the rooms. However, I left the vanities in place because I really wasn't up to the task of pulling out the bathrooms at the time (for many reasons: mainly the mess and also all of the strata processes I would have needed to attend to. I don't know which type my builder used , assume that are standard one . But he requested to clear the house and no work will be done while they do the water proofing . So no dust or any bits and pieces of building materials get trapped in membrane. And thats a weeks of work and two layers of it . Think of it like a plastic sheet on the floor and wall .
