Need advice for updating awful, dated faux federation!
Comments (30)ensimpson, Please do not render that brick. It is quite a nice brick and render can look very cheap and often done poorly cracks and looks even worse. If you don't like the dutch cables, you can go about removing them. These are not primary roof structure typically, but there will be a little work in making good the roof where they were. Alternatively, give these gables a function, place a fixed louvre, like you have shown in the attached image and allow the roof to vent through them. This will also impact the comfort of the home as there will be less heat buildup in the roof cavity. I agree with the comment above, the driveway is very prominent. This is partly the perspective of this image, but you could consider options for the driveway paving. I do not think painting grey is a good one. Repaving with a natural grey material could be as there would be more life and texture to it, but it is an expensive one....See MoreTo cement render or not?
Comments (18)Man! Isn't it hard? BUT Houzz offers an opportunity so you get to read everyone's point of view! And the greaestt thing of all?!? You don't have to agree! I would go a darker render - charcoal like the gutters and downpipes, and ensure you include the "foundation bricks". Include Charcoal colour for the air-conditioner unit, gates, fencing to make them disappear. Windows frames and eaves painted a cool cream/white (like the house next door). Adding a very big square pot to the left of the entry platform and planting it up with something evergreen & substantially mature, might be nice too!...See MoreRender, no render or half render
Comments (13)I think you will get more bang for your street appeal Reno buck from refreshing garage door, and awnings, and some landscaping: perhaps even a timber pergola style entry way to add some visual interest. Pressure cleaning roof, paving as well will give it all a lift. You can always change you mind and render later. But I think with these changes, the lovely white windows and charm can shine through more, without the expense and upkeep involved in rendering....See MoreExterior render Colour
Comments (6)Dulux has about 4800 colours available to design professionals, and only about 10% of these are available as sample chips from your hardware store. There are so many subtleties and nuances with colours that are lost with digital images I would not want to make a recommendation online. The only way to make colour selections is to get paint colour swatches, stick them up, and observe them in different light conditions. Your perception and appreciation of them will change at various times of the day. I would not choose any grey for your home as grey is the mission brown of the future. I would choose one of the colours that is appropriate for the period of your home that works with the white window frames and roof tiles. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See Moreafjp
