Our Lush Garden Renewal in Malvern
Our clients are owners of a beautiful heritage home in Malvern. The home is a 1910 asymmetrical sandstone villa with stunning architectural detailing that needed a front and back garden to complete their dream home. The front garden was to be formal, mainly for receiving guests and encouraging them to slow down and view the garden before entering the home, as well as complementing the front facade, while the back garden was for entertaining the whole family.
We needed to create harmony between garden and driveway, ensuring the space was functional as well as beautiful. We decided to use a minimal plant palette, taking advantage of the simple scheme to sneak in beautiful pops of colour that would complement the elegant low hedging. In order to distract from the harsh line of fencing, we designed a decorative planting design that would look beautiful all year round. We strategically planted Japanese Plum yew to obscure the driveway to the garden to ensure there was an element of privacy while not distracting from the elegant design.
We are often asked about the trellis design behind the espaliered lemon tree, simply because it is one of the focal points of the garden. It has been expertly constructed with custom curved timber corners by our talented carpenter. The stone for the fencing was sourced from a demolished heritage home that was also constructed in 1910, so this created a welcomed symmetry with the home and brought the home’s charming character front and centre into the garden. Additionally, we found wrought iron at a salvage yard and commissioned a local blacksmith to rework it to fit the design.
The back garden was designed for a family with four children so planting was put to the extremities. A gorgeous Pierre de Ronsard rose hides the large shed in the corner of the garden. The most important part was a lush lawn for the kids to run and play, while the adults could enjoy a relaxing drink on the deck not too far away from the action.
There are so many complementary design elements to this project that we love, but we’d love to know what your favourite part is! Leave us a comment below - we’d love to hear from you.

2 years agoIt's beautiful. I have only one concern, aren't the nature strip plantings too tall?
