Brand new house — awkward living area space
Comments (9)Well, I guess you first need to think what you really want to use the space for. Will it be your main TV viewing area? (If so, I'd cosy it up with a big rug first). It's a shame to use it as a TV area though, since that means blocking off the sliding doors with furniture. I'm guessing at the moment you don't need as a little kids play area or teenagers homework area - but how about a home office, or even gym/workout area? (There's a great article on Houzz today about making smart home gym spaces: [https://www.houzz.com.au/magazine/step-up-your-workout-zone-with-10-simple-additions-stsetivw-vs~39722244[(https://www.houzz.com.au/magazine/step-up-your-workout-zone-with-10-simple-additions-stsetivw-vs~39722244).) Or, given, the sliding doors and tiles, how about a conservatory? An indoor herb garden, with some orchids, ferns and maybe even a small palm? Do you have a craft or hobby that could use a dedicated area? I'm thinking artistic types would love to turn the space into a mini studio - or I could let the person with whom I share my life play with his car parts there . . . (tiles! easy to clean up!) Of course, whichever option you choose for the space, I'd keep the cat climbing frame and snuggle-pod!...See MoreBest alfresco solution for north facing living and entertaining
Comments (6)Thank you very much for your suggestions. I do like the idea of the indoor flowing out to the outdoor so not sure a separate alfresco would suit. Something a bit off center towards the western end may work. I am also loving the idea of skylights in the house roof. Also considering keeping the main roof structure as is and adding a flyover roof for the alfresco that is quite high and slopes up to the north... I thought if not enough sun gets into the house in winter I could put a couple of skylights or translucent strips near the house end of the flyover....See MoreIs it ok to have north western orientation for your living areas?
Comments (3)It's not just about orientation but also size and type of opening and it's positioning in the room. I have 2 west facing bedrooms that never heat up at all because of the size of the windows and the fact they have window hoods on them. Sunlight hits those rooms only around 6pm for about 1hr. What you need is for someone to draw up a sun map for your house so you can see the path of the sun during the hottest months of the year. Even if the sun comes directly into that sliding door during the heat of the day there are still things you can do about it. Given that it adjoin an alfresco area with I presume a solid roof the orientation of your prevailing winds is going to be a bigger factor on the comfort of the room....See MoreNew Build house plans feedback
Comments (38)I would delete the wall behind the bed in the master bedroom as it doesn’t seem to serve any real purpose and turn the bed to place against the outside wall. The room will be far more spacious ....See MoreJennifer Ratten
