Do you need them for light during the winter? If not, a fly screen type arrangement may work but instead of fly screen use insulated board cut to size. Bunnings has it for budgeting purposes.

we flyscreened a large alfresco area with removeable screens made with shade cloth and were very pleasantly surprised to discover that the screens also kept the space much warmer in our cold winter and also made it more comfortable in summer as well as making it better for barbq cooking and eating all year.. you might also consider insulating under the roofing to improve temperature control

easy to cut with a pair of scissors, cut to shape, fold over the edge and staple to a timber frame or use standard DIY flyscreen frame available at hardware stores with all the necessary tools

Thanks, oklou. That’s a good option too. And you’re right, shadecloth can be extremely protective. The area shown with the arrow has commercial grade shadecloth, so the same stuff would match in pretty well, I guess.

we bought our commercial grade shadecloth from a maker of covers for trucks and canvas products and the extra advantage with the commercial product was that it was much wider and didn't need any joins to make our screen walls that were about 2500 tall and 9m wide

Yep, we benefited from the extra width as well. It’s a significantly better product than the standard hardware store stock, and comes in a much wider variety of colours too. I guess we’d both recommend commercial grade to anyone considering shadecloth.

You might already be onto it, but remember you can also use the fans to keep the warmer air at ground level.

Yep, tangerine9, we switch the direction. Remembering whether we have or havent, is the problem! Some dont realise the airflow can be reversed, so ta for your suggestion.
