Bedroom highlight vs vertical windows

We have a North/north west facing master suite. My question is shall I opt for a long highlight above our bed or a long vertical window on each side of our bed that begins above each bedside table? Is it better for cross ventilation? We also have a view of backyard pool. Just unsure of the merits of each.

My personal feeling is anything towards a westerly direction might cause more disadvantage in terms of heating than benefit in terms of cross ventilation. Bear in mind people aired their houses for a long time before open plan and airconditioning and multiple windows in each room became a thing, when houses were just a series of rooms with a door and a window. So a second window for that purpose might not be necessary. If you have a view you want to enjoy, vertical windows make sense, but the greater exposure to sun needs to be addressed by provision of external shade.

Which direction does the other window face?

Do you typically keep the door closed blocking the ability for cross ventilation from elsewhere?

From which direction do your prevailing cool breezes come from?

Is an external shade structure or fitting within the bounds of your budget/space/aesthetics?

Wow, so much to consider! I actually don't know the answers to many. We are have double glazing windows and we will have ducted air con. I guess our door is mostly closed. The cool breeze comes from the south west. Our master windows are facing the following direction.

Running with your second floor plan (and ignore the glass sliding doors in this image) but would you consider changing your 3m narrow splash to a full sized fixed window on half the side and the remaining side create as the cooking area with cupboards, oven etc.? You mentioned you have stacker doors in the direction of the lounge, but in terms of space, from these doors, it's living area no windows at a room length of around 7m, followed by 4m kitchen room length including a 3m narrow glass splash to provide natural light for the kitchen area (cupboards noted above)? From your drawings there seems to be no windows on the opposite wall, is that right? I feel you will need to bring additional natural light into the kitchen area possibly bigger than the 3m glass panels if only 0.6m tall (or similar) especially with cupboards on top. If you're not keen on swapping out the narrow splash here's another example with your second floor plan (and also ignore glass sliding doors in this image) but possibly a tall window or fixed glass panel before your kitchen bench starts - even if <1m wide. Or greater than 1m if you're OK to encroach on your 3m glass splash and make it shorter. If the island bench is not a "must" you could create similar to this image and have a L-shape bench so it encloses the kitchen a bit more. This will help create the next room of your house ie. Kitchen - and you'll gain a few more cupboards if you're really wanting additional. Then have the big fixed window adjoining the L-shape next to the seating bench. You could still have your narrow glass splash with cupboards above, possibly just shorter (only referencing the L-shape and large door in this image - imagine fixed glass full-size wall panel in lieu of door next to the seats. Ignore the remainder of the kitchen). Is this an existing dwelling or new home build? For either of your options, are you impacting your roof-line as your first floor plan suggests you're widening the kitchen by 1m? The first plan I'm guessing will cost more; light wells and extra bricks vs straight wall. As mentioned by the other posts, there's plenty of storage options. You still have a decent amount of room for cupboards including a full-sized pantry next to your fridge space. I also agree with jbantick's of balancing space indoors and out (not knowing surroundings).

to block out properly the window coverings have to extend past the top bottom and sides of the opening...what about a wall to wall, full height curtain hung from ceiling height (plus a dark coloured close fitting roller blind)...not cheap but could look like a luxury bedhead..OR if there are other windows in the room, try painting the window glass with removeable black water based paint under a close fitting roller blind as well as curtains, as described, for all the other windows

One of the biggest issues with shutters is the dusk and if you employ cedar they will fade unevenly in the sun. I think the best resolution lies in the glass. This will give you your privacy as well as low maintenance with the view unencumbered. There are glazing solutions that can be "switched on" to obscure for privacy. This may give you the best of both worlds. Fantastic View what a great place for a bath...

Orientation should also be an important consideration when planning a home. Generally, living areas should have north to take advantage of winter sunshine. Not quite so critical the further you get north, though Brisbane has quite cold temperatures in winter mornings. So I'd consider flipping the plan, so more living areas face north. Western sunshine is a major problem in summer. It's difficult to shade, & occurs at the hottest time in the day. It looks like that is the direction of your views, which is a pity. As you don't want to overglaze the western side of a house. Is the upstairs balcony covered by a roof? If not your west facing living areas could get very hot in summer. Same goes for the west facing master. Generally, it's not a great idea to have west facing bedrooms. If you must, try not to overglaze then badly. Use low-e glass on western windows, to reduce summer heat, & use external shutters or (vertical) awnings. As for your main question about upside-down living, it's quite polarising, some people live it, while some hate the idea & find it impractical (dragging groceries etc upstairs). The practicalities may tilt the scale away from upstairs living, but the views certainly tilt the scale towards upstairs living. It's definitely advantageous in cooler climates - as hot air rises, upper rooms are warmer, so the perfect place for living areas. I'm not so sure in warmer climates, as upstairs may get warmer, but also have access to summer cooling breezes (think the traditional Queenslander). Whatever you choose, make sure pool users have access to a bathroom close by, without tramping wet feet through much of the house.

Oh yes, climate. If you are putting in a pool presumably mild to warm, so summer cooling is more important than winter heaing?

You said the window/s face NNW and the compass appears to show I think WNW? Are you maybe talking about the same windows. Will there be windows on one wall or two walls?

Yes, we live in Perth, hot summers, mild winters. Average 18 to 20c day winter temps. Can be cool overnight at times. I redid the orientation on the compass from the actual bedroom windows. Thank you.

Without context I'm not really understadning the compass.

Do you have a floorplan you can post?

Will there be one wall with windows or two?

You have a bedroom and used the compass to find the orientation but you don't have the windows yet, is it a reno?

I have seen bedrooms with only vertical windows, but I have not usually seen master bedrooms with a highlight window and no other window in the room.

Once it is drawn I will post. To be honest I don't think I'm using the compass correctly. You are right though...I don't think I've seen a master with a highlight. ...I'm thinking perhaps floor to ceiling verticals starting from the outside of bedside tables. We will have 33course ceilings. Or perhaps start the vertical windows above the bedside tables. We will have only one wall of windows which will be directed at the backyard with pool.

If those are your only windows, and if you have a nice view too, do verticals.

But if they get summer sun, especially in the afternoon, which they will if they face somewhat west, provide some form of external shade to reduce heat.

Think about how you would do curtains. Unless you r a blind person. But equally what are you seeing out of the windows?
